Description

The Director of Human ResourcesWestern Canada, based in Edmonton, is a strategic and operational HR leader responsible for overseeing all aspects of human resources within the region. This includes a strong focus on labour relations, HR administration, and coaching managers. The role partners closely with senior leadership, regional managers, and national HR teams to ensure HR strategies align with business goals while fostering a compliant, engaging, and high-performance work environment.

Key Responsibilities:

Labour Relations

Provide guidance and support on all labour relations matters across the region, including collective bargaining, grievance handling, and union discussions.
Act as a key resource and liaison for union representatives and labour boards, fostering respectful and constructive dialogue.
Support and advise managers in interpreting collective agreements and managing sensitive employee relations issues, including disciplinary actions.
Ensure HR practices are compliant with relevant provincial and federal labour legislation, offering proactive counsel to prevent issues before they arise.
Promote and facilitate positive union-management relationships through collaboration, communication, and conflict-prevention strategies.

HR Administration and Operations (Western Canada)

Oversee day-to-day HR operations across multiple locations in Western Canada (e.g., BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba).
Ensure consistent application of HR policies and programs, including recruitment, onboarding, compensation, performance management, and employee development.
Monitor HR metrics and prepare reports to track effectiveness and compliance across the region.
Collaborate with national HR functions (Compensation, Talent, Payroll, etc.) to ensure alignment and consistency.

Leadership Coaching and Development

Provide hands-on coaching and guidance to regional managers and frontline leaders on HR best practices, leadership challenges, employee relations, and performance management.
Build leadership capability at all levels through individualized coaching, team development, and facilitation of leadership training.
Support managers in handling difficult conversations, conflict resolution, and driving accountability and engagement within their teams.

Strategic HR Partnership

Act as a trusted advisor to regional leadership teams, providing strategic HR guidance to support business goals.
Identify HR risks and opportunities and contribute to the design and implementation of solutions that enhance organizational effectiveness.
Foster a culture of inclusivity, respect, safety, and continuous improvement.


Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Industrial Relations, Business Administration, or a related field (Master’s degree or CHRP/CPHR designation is an asset).
8–10+ years of progressive HR experience, including at least 5 years in a HR leadership role.
Strong and proven experience in labour relations, including collective bargaining and grievance resolution.
Demonstrated success in coaching and developing people managers at all levels.
Solid understanding of provincial employment legislation and practices across Western Canada.
Experience supporting multiple worksites or a distributed workforce.
Excellent communication, facilitation, and conflict resolution skills.
Ability to lead in a fast-paced, complex, and unionized environment.


Travel Requirements:

Occasional travel across Western Canada is required.
