Director, Health, Safety and Environment

Join to apply for the Director, Health, Safety and Environment role at Orla Mining Ltd.

Orla Mining is striving to be the emerging gold producer of choice with a diversified asset base, a development and exploration portfolio, an experienced management team, and a high-quality board and shareholder base.

We operate the Camino Rojo Oxide Gold Mine in Zacatecas, Mexico, and are advancing projects in Nevada and Ontario. Our mission is to build a legacy of excellence, respect, and sustainable value through responsible gold mining, fostering a culture of care and respect.

The role aims to mitigate environmental, health, and safety risks while supporting community and Indigenous Peoples. It reports directly to the Chief Sustainability Officer.

Responsibilities include:
  1. Establish HSE management systems and standards in line with legal requirements and industry best practices.
  2. Design and implement cross-company training on health, safety, climate, and environmental policies.
  3. Guide site implementation of HSE systems and standards.
  4. Monitor compliance through audits and assessments.
  5. Support certification processes such as GISTM, Cyanide Code, and others.
  6. Advise executive and site leadership on environmental and safety matters, including permitting and strategy development.
  7. Monitor legislation and trends affecting HSE operations.
  8. Drive employee engagement and leadership training initiatives.
  9. Lead climate action strategies, including risk assessments and external reporting.
  10. Develop and manage crisis management plans and training simulations.
  11. Support risk management processes related to climate, environment, and safety.
  12. Assist sites in achieving external certifications.
  13. Define and monitor KPIs and performance metrics.
  14. Prepare reports and presentations for internal and external stakeholders.
  15. Support sustainability reporting and KPI monitoring.
Skills and Experience:
  • Post-secondary education in Environment, Health, and Safety; Master’s preferred.
  • 10+ years in sustainability, HSE within mining.
  • Management experience for at least 10 years.
  • Strong knowledge of environmental management, incident/emergency management, biodiversity, waste management.
  • Experience in crisis management and health and safety in resource sectors.
  • Experience with climate change strategies and ESG reporting standards.
  • Certifications in environmental science, health, safety, or management systems preferred.
  • Proficiency in MS Office and Adobe.
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish preferred.
Work Conditions:
  • Location in Vancouver or Toronto, hybrid schedule available.
  • Travel up to 30% for site visits in Mexico, US, Canada, and other locations.
