Job summary

Wanuskewin Heritage Park in Saskatoon, SK, seeks a Director of Finance and Administration to lead financial management, budgeting, reporting, and HR operations. You will collaborate with the CEO and leadership team to ensure long-term sustainability and strong internal controls within a dynamic nonprofit environment.

This role oversees audit cycles, cash flow, payroll, IT services, and funding compliance while guiding strategic planning and staff management.

Qualifications

  • Five or more years of progressively responsible experience in finance, administration, business management, nonprofit leadership, or a related field.
  • An undergraduate degree in business is required.
  • A Chartered Professional Accountant designation or working towards designation is preferred.
  • Applicants with less direct experience who demonstrate exceptional leadership potential, financial aptitude, and a strong commitment to learning are encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee financial management to ensure stewardship, cost efficiency, and sustainable operating results.
  • Develop and maintain operating and capital budgets, cash flow management, and forecasting.
  • Collaborate with department heads to align budgets with organizational objectives.
  • Ensure internal controls and financial procedures are followed; provide regular financial reports to management and board.
  • Manage external audits and present findings and statements to the board.
  • Ensure funding from donations, sponsorships, and grants is administered in compliance with laws and policies.
  • Oversee banking, accounts receivable/payable, payroll, and HR processes.
  • Oversee IT services and external support; contribute to strategic planning alignment.
  • Lead staff management to maintain a high-performing, cohesive team.

Job description

Wanuskewin Heritage Park is a non-profit Indigenous cultural centre and National Historic Site located in Saskatoon, SK. Home to the longest archaeological research program in Canada, Wanuskewin’s mission is to advance the understanding and appreciation of the evolving cultures of the Northern Plains Indigenous peoples. The park offers walking trails, public programming, interpretive tours, conference and event spaces, an on-site restaurant and gift shop, art galleries, and cultural performances. A conservation herd of Plains bison have recently been returned to the over 740 acres of endangered prairie grasslands.

Position Summary

The Director, Finance and Administration provides leadership and oversight for Wanuskewin Heritage Park's financial management, administrative operations, and human resource functions. Working closely with the Chief Executive Officer and leadership team, this position helps ensure the long-term sustainability of the organization through sound financial stewardship, effective planning, strong internal controls, and organizational support.

Key Responsibilities
  • Responsible to ensure financial management practices result in ongoing stewardship, cost efficiencies, and strong operating results, enabling growth and creating financial sustainability.
  • Responsible to develop and maintain Wanuskewin’s overall operating and capital budgets, cash flow management, and forecasting.
  • Responsible to work with all department heads to ensure each manager is able to manage their budget ensuring the overall budget achieves organizational objectives.
  • Responsible to ensure all financial procedures and internal controls are followed appropriately by each department.
  • Provide Wanuskewin management and the Board of Directors with accurate regular financial reports.
  • Responsible to manage the annual external audit process and present audit findings and audited financial statements to management and the Board of Directors.
  • Responsible for ensuring that all funding received from donations, sponsorships, and grants is administered in compliance with federal and provincial laws, regulations, policies, and legislation.
  • Responsible to ensure safeguards all of Wanuskewin’s financial resources including financial and cash flow management and asset management.
  • Responsible to accurately oversee the full banking, accounts receivable, and accounts payable cycles.
  • Responsible to oversee all aspects of human resources administration, including payroll and benefit administration, employee file record keeping, performance management, employee relations, and the employee on- and off-boarding cycle.
  • Responsible for the management of information technology services and oversight of external support provision.
  • Participate in the implementation of Wanuskewin’s strategic plan and ensure the financial plan is aligned with the strategic direction of Wanuskewin.
  • Responsible for overseeing all aspects of staff management ensuring a high-performing, engaged, and cohesive team.
Key Requirements
