Job summary

VIA Rail in Vancouver, BC, Canada is seeking a permanent, full‑time Heavy Duty/Diesel Mechanic to maintain locomotives and ensure safety and reliability of the rail fleet. The position offers a hourly wage range with shift premiums, comprehensive benefits, and travel perks.

The candidate should have a vocational diploma in heavy duty mechanics or related fields, and experience with diesel engines, rail equipment repair, and hydraulic/pneumatic systems.

Qualifications

  • A vocational diploma in heavy duty mechanics, diesel mechanics, automotive mechanics.
  • Experience with diesel and/or internal combustion engines.
  • Experience and/or certification in heavy rail equipment repair.
  • Knowledge of pneumatic and hydraulic systems.
  • Journeyperson certification or Red Seal is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Perform inspections, preventive maintenance, and repairs on locomotives.
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic failures.
  • Use maintenance procedures, technical manuals, and tools to ensure safe and reliable operations.
  • Ensure all work complies with maintenance programs and rail safety standards.
  • Meet and exceed Transport Canada regulatory requirements.

What we offer
  • Hourly wage: $38.49 to $46.43/hour
  • Shift premiums: evening ($1.50/hour), night ($2.00/hour)

Your responsibilities
