Job summary

VIA Rail Canada is hiring a heavy equipment/diesel mechanic to join our Vancouver team. You will perform inspections, maintenance, and repairs on locomotives to ensure safe, reliable operations.

The role requires a vocational diploma and experience with diesel engines and rail equipment. The position is full-time at the Vancouver Maintenance Centre, with a variable schedule including days, evenings, and nights.

Qualifications

  • Diploma in heavy duty/diesel or automotive mechanics.
  • Experience with diesel and/or internal combustion engines.
  • Experience/certification in heavy rail equipment repair; knowledge of pneumatic and hydraulic systems.

Responsibilities

  • Perform inspections, preventive maintenance, and repairs on locomotives.
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic failures.
  • Use maintenance procedures, manuals, and tools to ensure safe operations.

What We Offer
  • Hourly wage: $38.49 to $46.43/hour
  • Shift premiums: evening ($1.50/hour), night ($2.00/hour)
  • Comprehensive benefits (medical and dental) and pension plan

  • Free parking, locker rooms, showers, and cafeteria
  • 5 personal days and up to 10 sick days
Your Responsibilities
  • Perform inspections, preventive maintenance, and repairs on locomotives
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic failures
  • Use maintenance procedures, technical manuals, and tools to ensure safe and reliable operations
  • Ensure all work complies with maintenance programs and rail safety standards
  • Meet and exceed Transport Canada regulatory requirements
What We’re Looking For
  • A vocational diploma in heavy duty mechanics, diesel mechanics, automotive mechanics
  • Experience with diesel and/or internal combustion engines
  • Experience and/or certification in heavy rail equipment repairKnowledge of pneumatic and hydraulic systems
  • Journeyperson certification or Red Seal is an asset
Schedule
  • Permanent position (40 hours per week)
  • Variable schedule (days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays)
  • Overtime available
Work location
  • Vancouver Maintenance Centre, Mission Maintenance Centre
