Job summary

ICBC is seeking a Data Scientist I in North Vancouver to support the Road Safety Data Services team. You will develop advanced analytics across mobility, transportation and road safety, leveraging diverse data sources to identify trends and inform strategy.

You will lead analytical projects, apply statistical and geospatial methods, and collaborate with stakeholders to translate insights into actionable recommendations. Strong SQL, Python/R and GIS skills are essential in this hybrid role.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience leading complex analytical projects and developing analytical models, methodologies and data products.
  • Strong knowledge of statistical analysis, quantitative research methods, predictive analytics, data science methodologies and machine learning techniques.
  • Knowledge of transportation systems, mobility trends, road safety concepts, geospatial analysis, program evaluation and impact assessment methodologies.
  • Experience using SQL and Python and/or R for data extraction, analysis, modelling and automation.
  • Experience with AWS analytics platforms and visualization tools such as Tableau, QuickSight or similar platforms.
  • Experience with ArcGIS, QGIS or other GIS platforms to conduct geospatial and spatial analysis.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to frame complex problems, work independently, exercise sound professional judgment and influence strategic and operational decision-making.
  • Knowledge of data governance, privacy and information management principles, including their application in modern analytical environments.
  • Passion for innovation, continuous improvement and evidence-based decision-making.

Responsibilities

  • Develop a strong understanding of transportation systems, mobility trends, road safety challenges, stakeholder information needs and the broader factors influencing mobility outcomes across British Columbia.
  • Apply statistical, geospatial, predictive and exploratory techniques to solve complex business, operational and public-sector problems.
  • Design, develop and maintain analytical models, methodologies, data products and reusable analytical assets.
  • Integrate and analyze large, diverse datasets, including crash, claims, traffic, telematics, enforcement, transportation, demographic and partner data.
  • Evaluate transportation programs, road safety initiatives and policy interventions using rigorous analytical and impact assessment approaches.
  • Identify emerging mobility and road safety risks through proactive analysis, monitoring and predictive modelling.
  • Collaborate with business leaders, technology teams, researchers and external partners to develop innovative analytical solutions and translate findings into actionable recommendations.
  • Provide technical leadership and subject matter expertise while monitoring emerging technologies, analytical approaches, transportation trends and industry-leading practices.
