Job description

Our client in Kitchener is looking for an experienced Customs Compliance Specialist with certifications in International Trade Practices (CIFFA/FITT) and working towards a Certified Customs Specialist (CCS) designation to join them in a permanent full-time role!

As the Customs Compliance Specialist, you will oversee the day-to-day import and export activities, customs-related operations for the company, and provide compliance and regulatory support to the organization.

Education and Skills Requirements:
  • Must have a Certificate or Diploma in International Trade Practices (CIFFA/FITT)
  • Must have or be working towards a Certified Customs Specialist (CCS) designation
  • More than one (1) year of experience in Canadian Customs regulations
  • More than one (1) year of experience in import/export and transportation-related roles
  • Background in manufacturing is an asset
  • Strong understanding of trade regulations, including HTS classification, Incoterms, and Free Trade Agreements
  • Experience working with customs brokers and government agencies such as CBSA, CTPAT, CBP
  • Working knowledge of duty drawbacks, amendments, rulings, and customs audits
  • Excellent communication skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to think critically, demonstrate sound financial judgment, and have a business sense to make informed decisions
  • Ability to collect and analyze data from appropriate sources and prepare concise, meaningful communications
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities effectively in a rapidly changing environment
Job Responsibilities:
  • Prepare customs paperwork for outbound shipments and upload export declarations to the Customs Export Reporting System (CERS)
  • Coordinate with internal departments, US and Canadian customs brokers, freight forwarders, and carriers to arrange shipments and ensure efficient customs clearance
  • Respond to inquiries from brokers, provide customs paperwork, and handle USMCA (CUSMA), DOT forms (H7), EPA, bearing checklists, and quarterly ADD/CVD forms
  • Communicate with freight forwarders to arrange FCL, LCL, and air shipments
  • Manage the shipment process from departure to delivery, keeping vendors informed and providing necessary documentation
  • Request USMCA/CUSMA documentation from vendors
  • Audit invoices from truck carriers, customs brokers, and freight forwarders for accuracy and discrepancies
  • Stay current with customs and tariff rulings, as well as regulatory matters
