Job summary

BC Hydro in Vancouver is seeking a Customer & Energy Data Scientist to lead data operations for the EAS system and related self-serve tools. You will ingest data from meters and external sources, build views to enhance analytics, and collaborate closely with technology partners.

The role requires 6–8 years of experience in statistics and data modeling, strong programming (SAS, R, Python), SQL, and project leadership.

Qualifications

  • The candidate must hold a degree in statistics, mathematics, computer science, engineering, or another quantitative discipline.
  • The candidate must have 6–8 years of experience using advanced statistical techniques and creating data models and forecast analysis in analytical roles related to load research or utilities.
  • The candidate must have knowledge of file and database structure, information system design, and platforms such as Microsoft Fabric.
  • The candidate must have intermediate-level programming skills in SAS, R, and Python.
  • The candidate must have intermediate-level proficiency in SQL database querying languages.
  • The candidate must have strong project leadership, presentation, oral, written, and interpersonal skills.
  • Technical understanding of utility data and energy delivery within an electrical distribution network.
  • Understanding of technology project management and methodologies is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Manage daily operation of the foundational data system (EAS) along with self-serve tools.
  • Ensure internal data systems reliably ingest data from sources such as meters to enable analysis.
  • Manage processes that ingest externally sourced data, including Statistics Canada and Environment Canada.
  • Provide subject matter expertise to create new data views that enhance analytics.
  • Principal liaison between the business and Technology team.
  • Gather and convey business requirements to Technology team and vendors responsible for data platforms.
  • Project management for large, cross-functional Technology projects (CEA).
  • Lead or develop new team projects, such as creating local grid capacity models.
  • Support data enablement for senior data scientists developing load profiles, energy forecasts, and customer segmentation tools.
  • Possibly oversee people management functions based on experience.

  • The candidate will be responsible for managing the daily operation of the foundational data system (known as EAS) along with the self-serve tools developed by CEA.
  • The candidate will be responsible for ensuring internal data systems accurately and reliably ingest data from sources such as meters to enable the business to perform required analysis.
  • The candidate will be responsible for managing processes that ingest externally sourced data, including data from Statistics Canada, Environment Canada, and similar sources.
  • The candidate will be responsible for providing subject matter expertise to create new data views from BC Hydro systems that enhance existing analytics.

  • The candidate will be responsible for establishing and maintaining strong working relationships with Technology team counterparts, vendors, and business users.
  • The candidate will be responsible for accurately gathering and conveying business requirements to the Technology team and vendors responsible for managing the data platforms.

Project management

  • The candidate will be responsible for managing the CEA portion of large, cross-functional Technology projects.
  • The candidate will be responsible for leading or developing new team projects, such as creating new local grid capacity models.
  • The candidate will be responsible for providing data enablement support to senior data scientists developing load profile models, energy forecasts, and customer segmentation tools.

Team leadership

  • The successful candidate may have the opportunity to oversee people management functions, based on their experience and suitability.
Job Requirements
  • The candidate must hold a degree in statistics, mathematics, computer science, engineering, or another quantitative discipline from a recognized postsecondary institution.
  • The candidate must have 6–8 years of experience using advanced statistical techniques and creating data models and forecast analysis in analytical roles related to load research or utilities.
  • The candidate must have well-developed knowledge of file and database structure, information system design, and platforms such as Microsoft Fabric. Experience using AI tools to build models or processes is an asset.
  • The candidate must have intermediate-level programming skills in languages such as SAS, R, and Python.
  • The candidate must have intermediate-level proficiency in database skills, including SQL database querying languages.
  • The candidate must have well-developed project leadership, presentation, oral, written, and interpersonal skills.
  • The candidate must have a technical understanding of utility data and how energy is generated and delivered within an electrical distribution network.
  • The candidate should have an understanding of technology project management and methodologies, which will be considered an asset.
