Job summary

Cedar Strong Prevention & Intervention Society in Hope, BC, is seeking two full-time custodians for a new facility. This unionized role offers 40 hours per week at $21.72 per hour, with start dates to be determined based on readiness. Reports to Housing Manager.

You will perform cleaning, maintenance, and light groundskeeping, follow WorkSafeBC rules, keep logs, and report safety concerns. Requirements include Grade 10, at least one month of custodial experience, WHMIS and First Aid

Qualifications

  • Completion of Grade 10 or equivalent.
  • At least one month of custodial/cleaning experience.
  • WHMIS and First Aid certifications are required.

Responsibilities

  • Clean, wash, and disinfect building areas and surfaces.
  • Perform routine and deep cleaning tasks and maintain logs.
  • Operate cleaning equipment safely and report hazards.
  • Assist with minor maintenance and groundskeeping tasks.
  • Ensure security of the building and adherence to safety policies.

About Cedar Strong

Cedar Strong Prevention & Intervention Society provides supportive, client-centred services to individuals and families in Hope and the surrounding communities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Clean, wash, and disinfect building areas, including walls, windows, floors, carpets, furniture, mattresses, blinds, air vents, and washrooms.
  • Complete cleaning duties using methods such as dusting, polishing, vacuuming, sweeping, wet mopping, shampooing, waxing, and buffing.
  • Safely operate manual and powered cleaning equipment.
  • Complete routine cleaning, deep cleaning, and spot cleaning as required.
  • Collect and dispose of garbage and recyclable materials.
  • Maintain clean, sanitary, and organized refuse and waste-disposal areas.
  • Clean and maintain entrances, sidewalks, parking areas, and other exterior spaces.
  • Remove dirt, leaves, snow, and other debris using appropriate equipment.
  • Perform minor groundskeeping duties, including mowing, trimming, weeding, and watering.
  • Complete minor maintenance tasks within the scope of the position, such as unplugging sinks and toilets and replacing tap washers.
  • Report building, equipment, plumbing, electrical, or safety concerns to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Set up and move furniture for meetings, activities, and facility functions.
  • Maintain cleaning logs, key registers, inventory records, and other required documentation.
  • Monitor janitorial supply levels and assist with inventory and supply orders.
  • Secure the building by locking doors and windows and activating alarms when required.
  • Follow all applicable WorkSafeBC requirements and Cedar Strong health and safety procedures.
  • Use cleaning products, chemicals, equipment, and personal protective equipment safely.
  • Identify and report hazards, unsafe conditions, or damaged equipment.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Completion of Grade 10.
  • At least one month of recent related custodial or cleaning experience.
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.
  • Current WHMIS certification.
  • Current First Aid certification.
  • Familiarity with local trades and service resources is considered an asset.

Physical and Working Requirements

This is a physically active position that may require:

  • Lifting and carrying cleaning equipment, supplies, tools, and materials weighing up to approximately 50 pounds.
  • Standing and walking for extended periods.
  • Frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, pushing, and pulling.
  • Moving furniture, equipment, garbage containers, and custodial carts.
  • Repetitive movements associated with sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, scrubbing, and operating cleaning equipment.
  • Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination when using equipment or completing minor repairs.
  • Working indoors and outdoors in changing weather and environmental conditions.
  • Exposure to dust, noise, cleaning chemicals, fumes, bodily fluids, garbage, and other custodial hazards.
  • Wearing required personal protective equipment, including gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection, or respiratory protection when appropriate.

Applicants must be physically capable of completing the required custodial duties safely and effectively.

Additional Information

This position is connected to a new facility that remains under development. The anticipated start date and work arrangements may be adjusted based on construction completion, facility readiness, program implementation, onboarding requirements, staffing needs, and operational requirements.

Any adjustments will be made in accordance with the applicable collective agreement, employment standards legislation, and Cedar Strong policies.
