Job summary

e4c is seeking a Custodian for its Head Start program serving children ages 2.8 to 5 years. The role involves cleaning, groundskeeping, and minor repairs to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for children, families and staff.

Key duties include coordinating with the Program Manager, overseeing deliveries, maintaining supplies, and participating in safety procedures. A high school diploma, valid Class 5 license, and WHMIS are required, with preference for experience in education settings.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent is required.
• Valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence with a clean driver’s abstract.
• WHMIS certification is required.
• 1+ year of custodial, maintenance, or facilities support experience.
• Experience in an educational setting is considered an asset.
• Experience collaborating within an interdisciplinary team is an asset.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine cleaning, custodial, groundskeeping, and minor maintenance to keep the facility clean, safe, and well-maintained.
• Conduct minor repairs and coordinate building maintenance with the Program Manager and external providers.
• Monitor building conditions, perform safety inspections, and report concerns.
• Oversee deliveries, set up meeting spaces, transport supplies, and maintain satellite sites.
• Maintain janitorial inventory and support contracted maintenance services.
• Provide on-call support for facility security incidents and assist with safety procedures in collaboration with OH&S.
• Supervise the part-time Custodial Assistant and contribute to a safe, collaborative work environment.

Position Summary

The Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment at e4c’s Head Start program, serving children ages 2.8 to 5 years. The role performs routine cleaning, groundskeeping, and minor maintenance to ensure the facility and outdoor spaces are safe, functional, and well-maintained, supporting a positive environment for children, families, and staff.

Schedule

• Monday to Friday; 40 hours per week
• Flexibility to work occasional evenings and weekends, with adjusted scheduling as required.
• Participation in an on-call rotation may be required.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform routine cleaning, custodial, groundskeeping, and minor maintenance to ensure a clean, safe, and well-maintained facility.
• Conduct minor repairs, assemble equipment and furniture, and coordinate building maintenance with the Program Manager and external service providers.
• Monitor building conditions, conduct routine safety inspections, and report maintenance, repair, and safety concerns.
• Support facility operations by overseeing deliveries, setting up meeting spaces, transporting supplies, and maintaining satellite sites.
• Maintain janitorial inventory, order supplies, and support accurate coordination of contracted maintenance services.
• Provide on-call support for facility security incidents and assist with emergency, health, and safety procedures in collaboration with Occupational Health and Safety.
• Provide direction and support to the part-time Custodial Assistant, participate in team meetings, and contribute to a safe, collaborative, and well-functioning work environment.

Qualifications

Education

• High school diploma or equivalent required

Certification

• Valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence with a clean driver’s abstract.
• WHMIS

Experience

• 1+ year of experience in a custodial, maintenance, or facilities support role.
• Experience with commercial or industrial cleaning practices
• Experience performing minor building and facility repairs.
• Experience in an educational setting is considered an asset.
• Experience working collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team is considered an asset.
