Job summary

Stuart Olson is seeking a local Cost Controller in Alberta to manage turnaround project costs from the Red Deer area. You will monitor budgets, develop forecasts, and provide timely cost reporting to leadership, ensuring alignment with project plans.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in Business, Accounting, Finance, Project Controls, or related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of cost control, project controls, or turnaround/project experience in an industrial setting.
  • Strong understanding of turnaround, maintenance, or capital project execution.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
  • Experience with SAP, Power BI, Primavera P6, or other project controls systems is considered an asset.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management abilities.

Responsibilities

  • Cost Management & Reporting: Monitor and track turnaround expenditures against approved budgets.
  • Cost Management & Reporting: Maintain detailed cost reports and dashboards.
  • Cost Management & Reporting: Analyze actual costs versus budget and forecast.
  • Cost Management & Reporting: Identify cost trends, risks, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Cost Management & Reporting: Provide weekly and monthly cost performance updates to stakeholders.
  • Cost Management & Reporting: Support turnaround cost review meetings.
  • Forecasting & Analysis: Develop and maintain project cost forecasts.
  • Forecasting & Analysis: Evaluate potential impacts of scope changes and emergent work.
  • Forecasting & Analysis: Perform earned value and productivity analysis where applicable.
  • Forecasting & Analysis: Support cash flow forecasting and cost accrual processes.
  • Forecasting & Analysis: Assist in the preparation of final turnaround cost reports and closeout documentation.
  • Turnaround Controls Integration: Work closely with planners and schedulers to understand scope and execution plans.
  • Turnaround Controls Integration: Review labor, contractor, equipment, and material costs.
  • Turnaround Controls Integration: Support management of contingency utilization.
  • Turnaround Controls Integration: Track and report approved and pending scope changes.
  • Turnaround Controls Integration: Ensure cost impacts are communicated promptly to turnaround leadership.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration: Interface with Nova representatives, contractors, and project teams.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration: Participate in planning, execution, and closeout meetings.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration: Support decision-making through accurate and timely cost information.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration: Promote cost awareness and stewardship across the turnaround team.

  • Cost Management & Reporting

    Required Qualifications

    Preferred Experience

    • Experience supporting large industrial turnarounds within petrochemical, refinery, oil & gas, or chemical manufacturing environments.
    • Experience managing contractor labor and productivity reporting.
    • Familiarity with estimating, planning, scheduling, and forecasting processes.
Physical Requirements
  • Physical ability to lift up to 50lbs; occasionally lift items weighing more than 50 lbs. with assistance
  • Stand or walk for long periods of time
  • Use arms and hands to reach for, handle or manipulate objects
  • Climb up and down ladders, scaffolds and other objects
