Job summary

Surrey School District is seeking a K-3 Core Music Teacher to lead core music programs across designated elementary schools. The role requires collaboration with school staff and administration and alignment with district and ministry expectations.

The successful candidate will manage equipment care and inventory, implement engaging music pedagogy, and contribute to a diverse, inclusive learning environment. A BC Teaching Certificate is required.

  • Valid BC Teacher’s Certificate.
  • Bachelor’s specialization in music or music education or a Graduate Diploma – Elementary Music Specialization.
  • Equivalent training includes demonstrated ability to read music and related music pedagogy courses.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare a draft schedule for core music programs in designated schools after consulting with staff and administration.
  • Implement the program in keeping with District and Ministry expectations.
  • Ensure care, inventory and maintenance of school music equipment.

The Role
  • Prepare a draft schedule for core music programs in designated schools, after consultation with individual school staffs and administration for approval of administration;
  • Implement the program in keeping with District and Ministry expectations; and,
  • Ensure care, inventory and maintenance of school equipment.
Minimum Academic Qualifications / Experience
  • A valid B.C. Teacher’s Certificate;
  • Satisfactory practicum / teaching experience in elementary education (preferably K-4) or other teaching experience deemed to be comparable: and
  • Bachelors specialization in music or music education or a Graduate Diploma (PB+15) Program – Elementary Music Specialization.
As an alternate to (C) above, the following are viewed as equivalent training:
  • demonstrated ability to read music; and
  • one course with a significant component of Music pedagogy such as SFU – Education 478-4 (Designs for Learning: Music); UVIC – Music 237 (Music in the Elementary School Curriculum); or, UBC equivalent to the above courses; and,
  • three university level courses (or the equivalent) from any of the following areas:
  • choir
  • strings – guitar and/or ukulele
  • ORFF &/or Kodaly
  • recorder
  • drumming – Djembe, Taiko
  • equivalent coursework or demonstrated expertise in playing & teaching the playing of a musical instrument.
It is preferred that Core Music Teachers possess a specialization in one of the following:
  • Bachelors of Education – Music Education, Graduate Diploma (PB+15) Program – Elementary Music Specialization,
  • or Masters of Educations – Music Education.

Ranges for $63,000 to $116,000, with placement on the range based on length of service, FTE and qualifications in accordance with the Collective Agreement.
