Job description

Reporting to : Manager, Food Services and Housekeeping

Job status : Permanent 0.6 FTE (45 hours bi-weekly)

Compensation : $28.48 / hour (aligned with Grid Level 19 of HEABC Facilities Wage Schedule)

JOB SUMMARY

The primary responsibility is to provide care and support in a safe, nurturing environment, ensuring the physical, emotional, and social well-being of everyone involved.

As part of the Food Services team, the Cook plays a key role in creating a welcoming environment that fosters trust, inclusivity, and collaboration. Meals are a vital support to families and staff, and the kitchen fosters community. Cooks plan, prepare, and cook various food items (according to FoodSafe standards); assign tasks; and work closely with staff, families, and volunteers.

Cooks are expected to maintain professionalism and adhere to organizational policies, procedures, and values of care at all times.

ACCOUNTABILITIES – 100%

This role mainly focuses on providing care and support to children, families, staff, and volunteers, including directing kitchen volunteers, assisting in recreational activities, and being flexible to meet needs outside set meal times.

The rest of your time will involve supporting the organization's mission, values, and operations, including:

  • Following daily menu plans and adjusting for changes in attendance
  • Ensuring food preparation adheres to guidelines and FoodSafe standards
  • Checking supplies and restocking as needed
  • Assigning tasks and supervising volunteers
  • Assisting in recreational planning involving children and families
  • Maintaining food storage rotation and minimizing waste
  • Contributing to menu and recipe planning in collaboration with the Food Services Coordinator
  • Following cleaning schedules and safety practices
  • Communicating with families and staff about dietary needs and allergies
  • Attending interdisciplinary rounds as required
  • Performing other related duties as assigned

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Completion of a recognized cooking school qualification, with at least one year of food preparation and cooking experience. FoodSafe Level 1 certification is required. Equivalent education, training, and experience will be considered. Experience in healthcare settings is preferred.

Please note :

  • Proof of Health Canada-approved vaccinations is required before starting.
  • Flexibility for weekend and evening shifts and travel within and outside the Lower Mainland is necessary.
