Job summary

Aspira Doon Village Retirement Living is hiring a Cook (Casual) to support nutritious meals for residents. You will prepare meals according to production sheets and recipes, set up equipment, and ensure proper portioning and temperatures.

The role may involve assisting with menu changes and training new team members. Applicants should have Grade 12, Safe Food Handling and/or Smart Serve certificates, and experience in institutional or healthcare cooking.

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 minimum education required.
  • Valid Safe Food Handling and/or Smart Serve certificates.
  • Experience cooking in institutional, health care, restaurant, or hospitality settings.
  • Demonstrates a positive attitude aligned with residence goals.
  • All applicants must pass Vulnerable Sector Check (Ontario) and Criminal Records Check (BC).

Responsibilities

  • Set up equipment and supplies for food preparation.
  • Prepare meals and snacks per production sheets and recipes.
  • Provide for prescribed diets at correct temperatures and portions.
  • Monitor quality of food supplies and advise on corrective actions.
  • In absence of team leader, assist with menu changes, requisitions and purchasing.
  • Assist in orientation and training of new team members.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

The Cook is a critical role within our communities as it impacts the lives of residents and ignites the warmth of human connection.

As a Cook your typical day will impact in the following ways:

  • Setting up equipment and supplies for food preparation.
  • Preparing meals and snacks according to production sheets, recipes and other menu document as provided.
  • Providing for prescribed diets, at appropriate temperatures and in portion controlled quantities.
  • Monitoring quality of food supplies received and advises team leader of problems and makes recommendations about corrective action.
  • In the absence of the team leader, assumes responsibility for departmental operations including menu changes as necessary, requisitions and purchases food and other supplies from authorized suppliers.
  • Assisting in the orientation and training of new team members.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

Must haves:

  • Grade 12 minimum education required.
  • A valid Safe Food Handling Certificate and/or Smart Serve certificate.
  • Experience with cooking in institutional, health care, restaurant, or hospitality
  • Demonstrates a positive attitude necessary to meet the goals and standards of the residence.
  • All applicants must successfully pass the prescribed Vulnerable Sector Check. Applicable to Ontario applicants.
  • All applicants must successfully pass the prescribed Criminal Records Check. Applicable to British Columbia applicants.

Bonus Points for having:

  • Graduate of a recognized college food preparation program and willing to Red Seal certify.
