Job summary

CDN Controls ULC is seeking Automation Specialists/Programmers for Calgary, Edmonton and Grande Prairie. You will coordinate, troubleshoot, and implement control systems, monitor commissioning and start-ups, and manage safety shutdowns to prevent equipment failure.

The role requires experience with PLC/SCADA, field automation, and on-site commissioning, along with SIS/SIL knowledge and strong communication with clients.

Qualifications

  • Experience in field automation with PLCs and RTUs.
  • Design of control and automation systems for oil and gas facilities.
  • Experience with Allen Bradley PLCs, RSLogix, Modicon PLCs, Ignition SCADA, VTScada.
  • Experience with Allen Bradley hardware.
  • Knowledge of SIS and SIL applications.
  • Ability to execute control system integration on multiple complex projects.
  • Motivation to improve existing processes.
  • Understand complex control systems and identify improvements.
  • Computer proficiency with MS Office, MS Projects, PowerPoint, and Excel.
  • Valid class 5 driver's license with clean abstract.
  • Pre-Employment Drug and Alcohol Testing.
  • H2S, First Aid Level C CPR & AED, CSTS, CSO, TDG & WHMIS.

Responsibilities

  • Design control systems for compressor stations and processing facilities.
  • Develop PLC and DCS software.
  • On-site commissioning and startup support.
  • Create and maintain controls standards and specifications.
  • Perform complex troubleshooting of control and automation systems.
  • Back up PLC/HMI/RTU programs and files.
  • Pre-test equipment and software.
  • Obtain safe work permits and perform risk assessments.
  • Coordinate changes with supervision and document MOC when needed.
  • Communicate with client about plant shutdowns and safety implications.
  • Troubleshoot hardware and wiring issues.
  • Work with different voltages, coordinate with electricians.
  • Test and verify work; ensure bypasses are removed.
  • Sign off and return permits.

Job description

CDN is a recognized industry leader in the energy services sector. CDN is a full-service provider with expertise in Electrical & Instrumentation maintenance, renewables/solar, major projects, combustion & emissions reduction, and measurement.

We are looking to hire Automation Specialists/Programmers to join our team based out of Calgary, Edmonton and Grande Prairie.

This role is responsible for coordinating, troubleshooting, and implementing control systems, monitoring, and completing commissioning and start-ups on new facilities. In addition the Automation Specialist/Programmer is responsible for the regular maintenance operation, metering and safety shutdown of wellsite’s and plants facilities to ensure no equipment failure occurs.

Responsibilities
  • Compressor Station, and Processing Facility Control System Design.
  • Software Development of PLC and DCS systems.
  • On site commissioning and startup assistance of new facilities.
  • Development of Controls and Automation Equipment Standards & Specifications.
  • Perform complex technical tasks related to control and automation systems.
  • Backups of PLC/HMI program “Asfound” and Modified files are extremely important.
  • Pre-test equipment and software as much as possible.
  • Initiate work alone process if required.
  • Obtain Safe work permits.
  • Fill out Pre job hazard Analysis.
  • Obtain a clear scope of work from direct supervisor or client.
  • Communicate with client representative on how the requested work will affect plant operation and surrounding personnel. i.e. plant shutdown, beacon/horn actuation etc. Ensure all parties who are working in the vicinity and could be affected are aware of the hazards or changes to the work zone.
  • If any changes affect the control or shutdown operation of the plant they must be in writing by someone with authority to do so. Preferably the MOC (Management of change) documentation should be attached.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose hardware and wiring issues.
  • Deal with a variety of voltages, help of an electrician is common practice.
  • Work with Pressures in the operation of process equipment.
  • Back up all PLC, HMI, RTU, etc. “Asfound” programs and file.
  • Perform work and test. If any forces or disabling was required for testing, start up etc. Ensure they are removed before leaving site, never leave a bypass in place. If a bypass must remain, it must be ordered and documented by someone in Authority to do so, not just an operator.
  • Final check of work performed.
  • Backups on site, document changes.
  • Sign off, Return permits.
Job Requirements
  • Experience in field automation with PLC's remote terminal units.
  • Control and automation system design of oil and gas facilities.
  • Experience with control and automation systems with high level of experience with Allen Bradley PLC systems, RSLogix, Modicon PLCs, Ignition SCADA, VTScada and numerous software’s.
  • Experience with control and automation systems with Allen Bradley hardware.
  • Experience with and knowledge of Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) and Safety Integrity Level (SIL) applications.
  • Possess the ability to execute control system integration on multiple complex projects with a high level of customer satisfaction.
  • Have the motivation and ability to improve existing processes.
  • Understand complex controls systems and be able to identify potential areas of improvement.
  • Have computer experience with Microsoft Office, Microsoft Projects, PowerPoint, and Excel Work products.
  • Valid class 5 with a clean drivers abstract.
  • Pre-Employment Drug and Alcohol Testing.
  • H2S, First Aid Level C CPR & AED, CSTS, CSO, TDG & WHMIS.
