Job description

Our growing, Calgary area client is an innovative designer and manufacturer of premium architectural-lighting solutions. They are seeking a hands-on, highly skilled Manufacturing Engineer to bridge the gap between product development, operations, and quality. In this technical leadership role, you will play a critical part in strengthening factory capability, optimizing production, driving value engineering, and ensuring flawless product launches and ongoing sustaining execution.

Position Summary

As the Manufacturing Engineer, you will take ownership of sustaining engineering initiatives while driving manufacturing readiness for new product introductions (NPI). Partnering closely with Product Development, Product Management, Quality, and Operations, you will lead technical reviews, mentor team members, improve product reliability and cost structures, and maintain factory-wide quality standards.

Advantages
  • Robust Company Culture initiatives
  • Health and Dental Benefits
  • Philanthropy focused
Responsibilities
  • Technical Leadership & Mentorship: Manage the engineering queue against core business priorities. Lead technical reviews, mentor junior engineering colleagues, transfer legacy-product knowledge, and proactively elevate resource or technical risks.
  • New Product Introduction (NPI): Own manufacturing readiness from early design stages through pilot builds and full production ramp-up. Coordinate BOMs, routings, tooling, fixtures, assembly methods, inspection/test plans, and operator training to hit release gates.
  • Sustaining Engineering & Root Cause Analysis: Lead technical assessments for released products, manage component obsolescence, and execute supplier modifications. Direct root-cause analyses, containment plans, permanent corrective actions, and post-implementation effectiveness checks for field or factory issues.
  • Value Engineering (VAVE): Identify and implement cost-reduction opportunities across components, materials, processes, tooling, and architectures without compromising quality, aesthetic standards, performance, or compliance. Validate savings with Finance.
  • Design Verification & Compliance: Perform tolerance analyses, DFM/DFA reviews, prototyping, and testing across mechanical, thermal, optical, electrical, and control systems. Work with compliance owners and certification bodies (e.g., UL, CSA, ETL) prior to implementing design changes.
  • Product Data Management (ECO/ECN): Maintain CAD models, technical drawings, specifications, ERP BOMs, assembly instructions, and incoming quality criteria. Enforce robust change control via ECO/ECN procedures, ensuring revision traceability and inventory transition management.
  • Supplier Collaboration & Custom Feasibility: Work closely with vendors on component sourcing, tool design, and supplier quality issues. Assess feasibility, cost, lead time, and compliance impact for custom client modifications, releasing approved configurations to production.
  • Technical Escalations & Returns (RMA Support): Provide expert technical analysis for complex field returns and customer escalations. Conduct failure analysis on returned products to identify trends and inform warranty determinations.
Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Manufacturing, or Mechatronics Engineering (or equivalent).
  • Professional Licensure: Appropriate APEGA registration (P.Eng. or eligible) required for independent engineering practice.
  • Experience: Typically 5–10+ years of hands-on experience in manufacturing or sustaining engineering within a product-development environment.
  • Industry Background: Strong preference for experience in commercial/architectural lighting, electrical fixtures, or similar electromechanical manufacturing environments.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Proficiency with 3D CAD software, tolerance stack-up analysis, and DFM/DFA principles.
    • Demonstrated experience managing ERP systems, BOM structures, and ECO/ECN processes.
    • Solid background in thermal, mechanical, optical, and electrical integration.
    • Problem-Solving & Leadership: Proven track record in structured root-cause problem solving (e.g., 8D, 5 Whys), supplier development, and cross-functional team leadership/mentoring.
