Job summary

Northern Society for Domestic Peace seeks a full-time Support Counsellor at Cedar Rose Transition House in New Hazelton, BC. Qualifications

  • Completion of grade 12.
  • Post-secondary education in related field or extensive experience supporting women/families.
  • Training and/or experience including counselling, crisis management, shelter support, mental health first aid, IPV liaison with community partners.

Responsibilities

  • Provide non-judgmental, culturally relevant support to women, children, and youth in crisis.
  • Offer information, referrals to residents, former residents, and the public.
  • Provide crisis intervention and safety planning for residents and children.
  • Collaborate with program and agency teams to address residents' needs.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality at all times.
  • Assist with safeguarding children under the Child Protection Act and safety of residents.
  • Facilitate community education when requested, and support anti-violence goals.
  • Maintain accurate admissions, discharges, and residential information.
  • Engage in fundraising, surveys, staff meetings, and program representation.
  • Coordinate daily household management and time schedules.

Position:

Support Counsellor - Full Time (36-48Hrs per week)

Cedar Rose Transition House

New Hazelton, British Columbia

Under the limited direction of the Program Coordinator, the Support Counsellor is responsible to provide non-judgmental, culturally relevant support to women and their children who are in crisis, and/or who are experiencing threats or violence in the home, and to youth at risk by providing, a safe, warm, and trusting environment

Job Description:

Cedar Rose Support Counsellor

Responsibilities:
  • Follow best practices and provide a safe, warm and trusting environment for women and women and their children, and youth, who reside at Cedar Rose
  • Provide information, and referrals to residents, former residents and the general public,
  • Provide crisis intervention and safety planning to residents and their children,
  • Responsibly contribute as a member of a team of the program and the organization to address the needs of women, their children, and youth residing within the shelter,
  • Maintain the strictest of confidentiality at all times
  • Support resident children under theChild Protection Act, and ensure their safety while residents at the Transition House;
  • Facilitate community education when requested,
  • Provide services with the objective of stopping the inter-generational cycle of abuse by providing women and their children and youth, non-violent ways of resolving conflict by promoting the process of healing,
  • Maintain accurate account of admissions, discharges, statistics and current residential information,
  • Work for individual and collective social justice,
  • Assist women/care givers in supporting their children
  • When necessary provide advocacy, accompaniment and support to residents having to access the health care system, social services, police and/or judicial system, who otherwise lack support and have experienced violence
  • Actively participate in projects of the program and or the agency when requested i.e. fundraising, surveys etc),
  • Participate with annual evaluations and attend staff meetings, represent the program, agency and team in a positive manner,
  • Contribute to effective and fair operation of the organization,
  • Engage in ongoing personal and professional development,
  • Attend workshops, training and/or community meetings as required/requested,
  • Provide the accurate bi-weekly time schedule,
  • Coordinate daily household management,

Anyother related duties as required by the Executive Director, and working team at Northern Societyfor Domestic Peace, and/or Cedar Rose.

Education, Experience, & Training required:
  • Completion of grade 12
  • Degree in related field; women’s studies, sociology, counselling, social work, IFOT and/or Post secondary education in a related field, and/or extensive experience in supporting women and families.
  • Training and/or experience including counselling, crisis management, shelter support, mental health first aid, intimate partner violence and proven ability to liaise with community partners.

Due to the nature of the services provided and the needs of the women and children served by this program, being a woman is a bona fide occupational requirement of this position. This requirement is made in accordance with the British Columbia Human Rights Code.
