Job summary

NorQuest College is seeking a full-time Community Connections Indigenous Advisor to support LINC students’ settlement and engagement with Indigenous communities. You will collaborate with Elders, partners, and instructors to create welcoming learning environments and meaningful community activities.

The role emphasizes equity, diversity, inclusion, and anti-racism, with flexible work options and opportunities to engage with diverse newcomer populations across campus.

Qualifications

• Diploma/degree in settlement studies, social work, social sciences or related discipline.
• Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) and anti-racism practices.
• Knowledge of Indigenous communities and resources; ability to work with newcomers from diverse backgrounds.

At NorQuest College, the Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) program fulfills the “we’ll meet you where you’re at” commitment to newcomer students by offering a wide variety of language/settlement/essential skills/Indigenous programming, scheduling, and delivery modes as well as comprehensive student support options that meet the varied needs of our diverse newcomer student population, with the ultimate goal of helping them build social capital, and empower them to become self-sufficient, independent, and active members of the community and labour market. If you have demonstrable expertise, formal qualifications, a passion for supporting the newcomer students’ settlement process, experience and understanding in equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI), anti‑racism and anti‑oppressive practices, and creating vibrant and welcoming educational environments.

How You’ll Make a Difference

• Build and maintain strong relationships between LINC students, community members, and partner organizations, including Indigenous communities
• Collaborate with program leadership and Elders to ensure activities reflect program goals and incorporate Indigenous perspectives, culture, and ways of life
• Promote the program and recruit participants through meaningful engagement with community and sector partners
• Foster connections between students and diverse community groups, supporting cultural understanding and integration
• Plan and coordinate community-based learning activities, such as exercises and field trips, that promote shared knowledge and exposure to Indigenous and local community topics
• Organize and deliver weekly Community Connections webinars, including sessions highlighting Indigenous communities, culture, and lived experiences
• Support opportunities for students to build social capital, cultural awareness, and ongoing relationships within both Indigenous and broader community networks

What You Bring

• You have a diploma or degree in settlement studies, social work, social sciences and humanities, or related discipline or experience.
• A willingness to work with newcomers from diverse backgrounds and/or collaborating with community partners for whom English is an additional language
• You have an understanding of equity, diversity, inclusion as well as anti‑racism and anti‑oppressive practices.
• You have the knowledge of Canada’s colonial history and its impact on Indigenous communities.
• You have a strong knowledge of Indigenous community resources

• Work both independently and collaboratively with internal teams, leadership, and external community partners
• Build and maintain strong relationships with colleagues, instructors, Indigenous Elders, and community organizations
• Coordinate and deliver community engagement activities, including field trips and learning events
• Communicate and collaborate with instructors on needs assessments, scheduling, and program planning
• Seek guidance from Indigenous Elders and support the inclusion of Indigenous learning across programming
• Follow policies, procedures, and best practices to resolve issues, while using leadership as a resource
• Contribute to program operations, reporting, goal reviews, and continuous improvement through innovation and professional development

AUPE Band Level 7 | Advisor I | $2,205 - $2,864 bi‑weekly reflective upon what you bring AKA your education and experience. This is a full time, term position until March 31, 2027 with the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE).
