Job description

Job Brief

Our Waste and Environment Department has an opening for an Outreach and Education Technician in a one (1) year term position.

As part of the Infrastructure Services group, reporting to the Education and Outreach Lead, you will join a dedicated team of professionals passionate about the environment, focused on customer needs, tangible results, and maintaining a supportive team environment.

WAGE: $40.24 per hour

STATUS: 1 Year Term Position

HOURS: 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday, with evenings and weekends as required

Responsibilities

This position supports the Waste & Environment Department, primarily focusing on outreach, education, and communications. Key duties include data gathering, research, solution development, performance reporting, project management support, customer outreach, and other technical and general tasks. Responsibilities include:

  • Establishing and maintaining effective relationships with staff, government agencies, contractors, and the public
  • Updating managers and team members on project status, opportunities, and challenges
  • Organizing and executing outreach activities and programming
  • Promoting environmentally responsible actions through various communication channels
  • Leading public events and community meetings as a City of Lethbridge representative
  • Designing, creating, and maintaining communication materials, supporting website updates, and managing signs and tours
  • Overseeing outsourced work by external contractors/vendors
  • Analyzing communication data and reporting on key performance indicators
  • Managing projects, including research, planning, scheduling, and stakeholder communication
  • Preparing and presenting reports on waste/environment topics
  • Supporting other departmental activities, programs, and initiatives
  • Providing outreach support and customer assistance, including educational promotions and content development
Qualifications
  • Minimum 2 years of post-secondary education in Environmental Science, Management, or Communications
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and design or publishing software (e.g., Adobe Creative Cloud)
  • Excellent interpersonal skills for effective teamwork and relationship building
  • Knowledge of Community-Based Social Marketing is an asset
  • Experience in customer service and team environments
  • Friendly, respectful communication skills for engaging with diverse audiences
  • Strong technical and public writing skills for stakeholder reporting and information dissemination
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize multiple tasks
  • Mandatory working knowledge of waste and recycling issues and processes
  • Research, data analysis, and recommendation presentation skills
  • Project and change management experience
  • Experience with complex spreadsheets and technical data analysis
  • Valid Class 5 Operator’s license
