Job summary

Waste Connections of Canada is seeking an Operations Supervisor to lead our Commercial operations, supervising routes, transfer stations and licensed staff, ensuring safety and efficiency while coaching a team of four supervisors, dispatchers and an operations manager.

This 12-month contract with potential for permanency requires a DZ license, strong leadership, and a proactive safety mindset. You will coordinate schedules, conduct audits, and drive EH&S programs across Ontario facilities.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid DZ license or willingness to obtain.
  • Knowledge of OH&S and MTO regulations.
  • Experience operating refuse collection equipment is an asset.
  • Strong data entry and analytical skills.

Responsibilities

General Description

As an Operations Supervisor, you will play a critical leadership role within our Commercial business units, working as a team of four Supervisors, three dispatchers and an operations Manager. You will oversee daily operations including our properties and transfer stations and ensuring the safe and efficient performance of DZ Drivers, loader operators and other commercially licensed laboring staff. Your responsibilities can include training new employees where applicable and relevant, employee observations, coaching, leading monthly safety meetings, and maintaining compliance with company policies and industry regulations.

You will be responsible for ensuring that safety, compliance, customer service, growth, sales, and financial targets are consistently met. Strong leadership, ethical decision-making, and professionalism are essential to success in this role.

This is a 12-month contract with the possibility of permanent employment.

As an operations Supervisor with us, the minimum responsibilities are:
  • Supervise and manage the daily operations of multiple commercial collection routes.
  • Supervise and manage the daily operations of our transfer stations and staff within those facilities.
  • Review routing to assess financial and operational performance.
  • Conduct operational audits to ensure efficiency and compliance.
  • Ensure drivers complete daily safety and maintenance inspections for all company vehicles and equipment.
  • Plan and monitor employee schedules, maintaining communication throughout the day until all routes are completed.
  • Lead the recruitment process, including interviewing, selecting, and training new employees.
  • Implement performance management processes, including progressive discipline as necessary.
  • Conduct thorough incident investigations when necessary, including scene management, first incident reporting, root cause analysis, and implementation of preventive measures.
  • Maintain and enforce Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) programs, including training, safety meetings, and compliance reporting.
  • Ensure full compliance with company safety policies, MTO regulations, and other applicable industry guidelines.
Schedule

Monday through Friday on a four slot rotating start/finish, currently 5am, 6am, 7am, 8am but subject to change as the business requires. Rotating Saturdays mornings on-site, currently every fourth week, subject to change. Holiday coverage on a rotating basis for all stat holidays, except Christmas Day & New Years Day, currently 8 based on calendar, two per year, subject to change.

What We Need From You
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Prior experience in a leadership or supervisory role is preferred.
  • Possession of or willingness to obtain a valid DZ License
  • Knowledge of OH&S and MTO regulations.
  • Experience operating refuse collection equipment is an asset.
  • Strong data entry and analytical skills.
  • Union experience is an asset.
  • A SAFETY-FIRST mindset with a proactive approach to workplace safety.
  • Self-motivated with a strong ability to take initiative.
  • Must be able to pass all pre-employment requirements
