Job description

Collections Law Clerk for mid size law firm client, mid town Toronto.

Job Type : Full Time Permanent.

Compensation : From $60,000 to $75,000 per annum, according to experience, plus benefits.

Regular Work Hours : 7.0 hours per day not including 1 hour lunch break, to be worked during regular business hours, Monday to Friday (35.0 work hours per week).

Work Location : Hybrid - combination of 2 days remote-based and 3 days onsite at client's mid town Toronto office. Onsite work expectations subject always to client business requirements, and may change according to client business need.

Responsibilities Summary :

Manage high-volume caseload of debt recovery files for major banks and financial institutions, and provide diverse range of professional law clerk and debt recovery services to busy legal team, including file management, legal drafting, enforcement procedures, and direct communication with lenders, borrowers, and courts.

  • Draft legal documentation including demand letters, statements of claim, default judgments, writs of seizure and sale, and garnishments.
  • Coordinate with banks to obtain supporting documentation such as loan agreements, guarantees, and account statements.
  • Liaise with debtors, opposing counsel, and court offices to advance files toward recovery.
  • Conduct PPSA and land registry searches as required, and support enforcement of secured claims.
  • Monitor and manage timelines, limitation periods, and court deadlines.
  • Assist with mortgage enforcement, including power of sale proceedings and foreclosure actions.
  • Prepare status reports and billing summaries for institutional clients.
  • Maintain accurate electronic records and database systems.
  • Additional collections and bank recovery law clerk responsibilities as required.

Qualifications :

Education : Diploma from recognized Ontario Law Clerk program.

Professional Credentials : Institute of Law Clerks of Ontario (ILCO) certification.

Preferred Work Experience : At least 3+ years of relevant experience in bank recovery, with proven proficiency in drafting and filing pleadings, default judgments, writs, garnishments and motion records.

Preferred Sector Experience : Experience working directly with chartered banks or credit unions. Law firm experience preferred.

Technical and Language Skills Requirements :

  • Proficiency in legal document management systems.
  • Proficiency with MS Office applications.
  • Strong English communication skills, both written and verbal, including advanced level business writing skills, and professional telephone manners.

Task -Based Qualifications and Additional Attributes :

  • Sound knowledge of the Rules of Civil Procedure, Small Claims Court Rules, and enforcement remedies.
  • Familiarity with mortgage enforcement, PPSA enforcement, and secured recovery procedures.
  • Knowledge of insolvency proceedings and bankruptcy law.
  • Demonstrated record of professional conduct and character. Responsible, reliable and works to deadlines.
  • Pleasant and courteous, with proficient de-escalation skills. Excellent listening skills, and the ability to provide and receive effective feedback.
  • Proven ability to professionally handle confidential information and exercise good judgement in the interpretation and application of instructions and organization policy.
  • Superior attention to detail, and organized, methodical approach to completion of tasks.
  • Advanced organizational, coordinative and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks effectively for self and others, meet tight deadlines and work well under pressure.
  • Demonstratedabilitytoworkwell bothindependently andcollaboratively, and in an advisory capacity.
  • Demonstrated successful experience of prioritizing work, making decisions and communicating with otherswithin a values framework of respect, equity, anti-racism, diversity and inclusivity.

Additional Requirements :

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada, providing satisfactory documentation upon request.
  • Ability to work both remotely and onsite, abiding by organization health and safety policies.
  • Ability to declare personal Non-Conflict of Interest in execution of position responsibilities.
  • Satisfactory Background Checks, Technical Skills Evaluations, and Employment References.
