Job summary

Baker Tilly in Dartmouth, NS is seeking a Co-op Student to join our Assurance and Advisory team. You will support accounting systems setup, prepare financial information, and assist with audits, tax returns, and advisory tasks.

You’ll work with accountants and partners, gain exposure to audits, financial reporting, and client service, and be part of a growth‑minded firm that values development and collaboration.

Qualifications

  • Working towards or has completed a bachelor’s degree in commerce or business administration with an Accounting/Finance focus.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to write clearly.
  • Interest in accounting and tax work; highly motivated with attention to detail.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and problem-solving abilities.
  • Proficiency in common computer applications; Caseware/Caseview and TaxPrep are assets.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, set up and administer accounting systems and prepare financial information.
  • Examine accounting records and prepare financial statements and reports.
  • Perform audit duties at a junior level and ensure compliance with standards.
  • Develop and maintain cost savings, reporting and internal controls.
  • Examine financial accounts and prepare income tax returns.
  • Analyze financial statements and provide financial, business and tax advice.
  • Assist with compilations, tax returns & personal taxes.
  • Build relationships with staff, partners and clients.
  • Participate in special projects as assigned by senior staff.

Your role:
  • Plan, set-up and administer accounting systems and prepare financial information for an individual, department, company or other establishment.
  • Examine accounting records and prepare financial statements and reports.
  • Perform audit duties at a junior level. This includes examining and analyzing journal and ledger entries, bank statements, inventories, expenditures, tax returns and other accounting and financial records, documents and systems of an individual, department, company or other establishment to ensure financial recording accuracy and compliance with established accounting standards, procedures and internal controls.
  • Develop and maintain cost savings, reporting and internal control procedures.
  • Examine financial accounts, accounting records and prepare income tax returns
  • Analyze financial statements and reports and provide financial, business and tax advice.
  • Compilations, tax returns & personal taxes
  • Build and nurture strong working relationships with staff, partners and clients
  • Participate in special projects as assigned by partner or senior staff.
What you bring to the table:
  • Working towards or completion of a bachelor's degree in commerce or business administration (Accounting/Finance major)
  • Working towards completion of pre-requisite courses for the CPA PEP
  • Familiarity with basic accounting concepts (balance sheet, income statement, etc.)
  • You are an excellent communicator with strong written and verbal skills
  • Have an interest in accounting and tax work
  • Be a highly motivated individual with a strong work ethic and keen attention to detail
  • You have strong interpersonal skills and are an excellent problem solver
  • You are proficient in, and willing to learn various computer applications.
  • Knowledge of Caseware/Caseview and TaxPrep is an asset (but not required)
