Job summary

The Government of Alberta, through Alberta Parks, seeks a CNC Snowmaking Crew Lead for Canmore Nordic Centre Provincial Park. This seasonal role leads snowmaking crews, implements strategy, and oversees equipment operation across extensive trails while ensuring safety and efficiency in winter conditions.

Position runs late Oct 2026 to Feb 2027 with evenings, nights, weekends shifts and shift premiums. Prior supervisory experience and outdoor winter work ability are essential.

Qualifications

• Some high school education and one year of related experience.
• Current Standard First Aid and CPR Level C/AED Certification.
• Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s License with clear 3-year driving record.
• Experience operating snowmaking equipment and snowmobiles/ATVs.

Responsibilities

• Lead, supervise, coach, and train seasonal snowmaking crews of three to four persons in snow production and related tasks.
• Implement snowmaking strategy and plan.
• Operate snowmaking equipment and assist in setup across two stadiums and 20+ km of trails.
• Perform maintenance for equipment and monitor pumps/ compressors.
• Track inventory of parts and supplies.
• Support winter grooming program and safety of trails.
• Assist in setup, running, and cleanup of winter events.

Salary: $25.55 to $31.27 per hour

Wage Benefits:

• 5.6 percent of regular wage earnings instead of paid holidays.
• 6 percent of regular wage earnings instead of annual vacation pay.

In addition to the regular wages and the additional pay in lieu of benefits and vacation, regular wage employees are entitled to shift premium pay:

• $3.25 per hour for weekends
• $2.75 per hour for evenings
• $5.00 per hour for nights

Do you enjoy winter outdoor work? Are you interested in supporting the trail snowmaking programs, which provide exceptional Nordic ski experiences to visitors and athletes within Canmore Nordic Centre Provincial Park?

The Canmore Nordic Centre (CNC) is home to world class winter events and the Kananaskis Region of the Alberta Parks and is looking to fill seasonal Snowmaking Crew Lead positions for the winter season that runs from approximately late October 2026 to late February 2027.

These positions work mainly outdoors and include evening, night, and weekend shifts (with shift premium pay). All positions are contract terms.

Duties include, but are not limited to

• Lead, supervise, coach, and train seasonal snowmaking crews of three to four persons in performing snow production and related tasks.
• Implement snowmaking strategy and plan.
• Operate side by sides, snow machines, ATV’s and other equipment to set-up, move, operate and operate snowmaking fan guns and air/water pole guns across two stadiums and over 20 km of snowmaking serviced trails.
• Perform regularly scheduled maintenance for equipment.
• Monitor and operate pumps and compressors.
• Track and maintain inventory of parts and supplies.
• Perform support to the winter grooming program through operation of snowmobile grooming machines, especially after snowmaking is completed.
• Participate in the monitoring, maintenance and safety of all designated trails.
• Make snow for the Frozen Thunder program.
• Assist in the set-up, running and clean-up of winter events.

To be successful in this role, you will need to

• Ensure there is adherence to all pertinent policies, procedures, and protocols, including Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) and following Government of Alberta guidelines.
• Have a mechanical aptitude and equipment operating experience including the ability to troubleshoot equipment and the ability to work outdoors in the winter for long periods of time.
• Ability to support and work with other team members within the Kananaskis Region and at Canmore Nordic Centre Provincial Park.
• Use good judgment and have the ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
• Respond to public inquiries and address any safety concerns.
• Interact with the public in a professional manner to create a positive visitor experience.
• Be able to lift 25 kilograms.
• If needed, lead and participate in emergency and evacuation protocols to provide support to visitors and staff in emergency situations.

Qualifications

Required:
• Some high school education and one year of related experience, including operating and maintaining equipment and some supervisory experience.

Additional requirements (must be submitted prior to employment):
• Recognized Current Standard First Aid and CPR Level “C”/AED Certification (must be maintained as current for the entire period of hire by the employee).
• Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s License or equivalent and clear 3-year Driver’s Abstract.

Assets:
• Experience and knowledge with snowmaking operations, operating snowmobiles, ATV’s, tractors or agricultural equipment.
• Good mechanical and troubleshooting skills to identify mechanical or operational issues.
• Well-developed oral and written English skills to effectively communicate with the general public to answer inquiries.
• Familiarity with Nordic skiing (Classic, Biathlon, Skate).
• Familiarity with Kananaskis Region and surrounding area.

Minimum recruitment standards outline the minimum education and experience required for appointment to a job classification.

• Seasonal contracts from late October 2026 to late February 2027, dependent on winter seasonal weather and operating conditions.
• Shift schedules are built into a 24/7 operations; these positions may require you to work evenings, weekends, and holidays throughout the duration of the winter as required.
• Hours of employment are up to 40 hours per week, either 8- or 10-hour shifts.
• You must have access to reliable transportation to and from work.
• Training will be provided to successful candidates.
