Descripción del empleo

We are looking for an experienced CNC Programmer to lead our machining department. You will program and run our vertical machining centres, a Fadal VMC 4020 and a FlexCNC long-bed machining centre, producing precision metal parts and components for our architectural projects.

You will machine materials such as aluminum, mild steel, stainless steel, and other specialty alloys, along with supporting materials such as acrylic and polycarbonate (Lexan) that form parts of our assemblies. Metal machining experience is critical for this role.

To start, your work will combine machine programming with hands‑on machine operation as you get familiar with our equipment and the parts we make. Shortly after, you will take on training the machine operators and junior programmers who will be hired to support this role.

We are looking for someone who is precise, organized, and independent, and who takes pride in their work.

What You’ll Be Doing
CNC Programming
  • Program parts in Fusion 360 from drawings and 3D models, including toolpaths, setups, and post‑processed G-code.
  • Select tooling, feeds, and speeds suited to each material, from aluminum to stainless steel and other specialty metals.
  • Plan workholding and fixturing, including for large and long parts on the FlexCNC.
  • Prove out new programs and refine them for accuracy, finish, and cycle time.
Machine Setup & Operation
  • Set up and run our Fadal VMC 4020 and FlexCNC long‑bed vertical machining centres, including tool setting, work offsets, and first‑article checks.
  • Operate the machines hands‑on, especially at the start as you learn our equipment and parts.
  • Use manual equipment such as our lathes, knee mills, and radial arm drill as needed.
Drawings, Modelling & BOMs
  • Read and interpret technical drawings, specifications, and GD&T callouts.
  • Create and adjust SolidWorks models for machining and fabrication.
  • Generate bills of materials (BOMs) to support procurement and production.
  • Work with our design team and shop foreman to resolve manufacturability questions before parts are cut.
Quality & Inspection
  • Inspect machined parts with precision measuring tools and verify them against drawings.
  • Trace and correct quality issues at the source, whether in the program, the setup, or the tooling.
Leading the Machining Department
  • Take ownership of machining output, keeping machine work organized and in step with the shop’s schedule.
  • Document programs, setups, and procedures so work can be repeated reliably.
  • Manage tooling, cutting supplies, and machining stock, and flag needs ahead of time.
  • Monitor machine condition and coordinate regular maintenance and repairs.
  • Train, mentor, and lead the machine operators and junior programmers hired to support the department.
Safety & Shop Practice
  • Follow all safety protocols and wear appropriate PPE.
  • Keep the machines and machining area clean, organized, and safe.
  • Take part in team meetings, training sessions, and continuous improvement efforts.
What We’re Looking For
Experience
  • 5+ years of hands‑on CNC programming and machining experience, with metal machining strongly preferred.
  • Experience machining aluminum, mild steel, and stainless steel. Experience with other specialty alloys is an asset.
  • Experience machining plastics such as acrylic and polycarbonate is an asset.
  • Experience setting up and running vertical machining centres. Experience on Fadal or long‑bed machines is a strong asset.
  • Familiarity with other equipment, such as lathes, press brakes, laser welding, robotic, or metal additive (3D printing) systems, is a bonus.
  • Experience training or leading others is an asset.
Technical & Software Skills
  • Strong CAM programming skills. Fusion 360 is preferred; experience in another CAM platform and a willingness to work in Fusion 360 is also welcome.
  • Working knowledge of SolidWorks.
  • Ability to read and edit G‑code.
  • Proficiency with precision measuring tools such as calipers, micrometers, and height gauges.
  • Sound shop math.
Education & Certifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • A college diploma or certificate in machining, CNC programming, or a related field is an asset.
  • Machinist trade certification is an asset.
  • Training in, or familiarity with, ISO 9001 or related quality management standards (such as AS9100) is an asset.
  • Forklift certification, or a willingness to obtain it.
Skills & Attributes
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to quality.
  • Organized, with clear written and spoken communication in English, including technical documentation and training others.
  • Ready to take ownership of a department and set its standards.
  • Punctual, dependable, and able to work both independently and in a team.
Physical Requirements
  • Prolonged periods of standing and bending, and lifting up to 50 lbs, with mechanical aids and team lifts used for heavier work.
  • Comfortable working in a variety of environmental conditions (noise, heat, dust, fumes).
  • Strong hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity.
Compensation
  • $30–$40/hour, based on experience and skill level.
  • After a 3-month probation period, this role includes access to health benefits, a group payroll contributions program, and 2 paid sick days annually.

  • Be part of a growing, supportive team that values craftsmanship and creativity.
  • Opportunities for professional development and growth.
