Job summary

Special Areas is hiring a Maintenance Grader Operator for Special Areas No. 2 in Hanna, Alberta. You will operate graders to maintain roads, perform routine servicing, and ensure safety standards are met while working outdoors.

The role requires strong communication and the ability to lift heavy loads. Eligible candidates have 6+ years of grader experience, a GED or high school diploma, and a Class 3 Alberta driver’s license; familiarity with CAT and John Deere graders is preferred.

Qualifications

  • Six or more years of progressive grader experience.
  • Experience operating CAT and John Deere models with grade control.
  • Strong communication and professional interaction.
  • Physical ability to lift 50 lbs and enter/exit equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventative maintenance and safety inspections.
  • Document services and support minor repairs as needed.

We are seeking an experienced, highly motivated, and safety-oriented individual to join our team as a Maintenance Grader Operator (Special Areas #2). The successful candidate will operate a grader to maintain and improve oiled and gravel-surfaced roads, access routes, and rights-of-way, ensuring all work meets Special Areas policies for safety, quality, and efficiency. The ideal candidate is comfortable working independently outdoors, managing a variety of maintenance tasks, and contributing to team objectives. This full-time position offers stable, meaningful employment with opportunities for training.

What You'll Do

Operation of Road Equipment

  • Safely and effectively operate graders and other road equipment to perform tasks such as road maintenance, grading, and snow plowing.
  • Move and grade earth, rock, gravel, or other materials using machine-specific controls and attachments to complete road maintenance tasks.
  • Involved in the re-establishment and maintenance of cross sections, super elevation, shoulder pulls and back trail construction and maintenance.
  • Recognize existing and potential hazards by conducting field-level pre-job hazard analyses, inspecting equipment for safety issues, and assessing tasks before starting work.

Reporting, Equipment Service, and Minor Repairs

  • Perform mechanical inspections and routine servicing, including controls and operations, lubrication, and minor adjustments and maintain accurate records and ensure proper housekeeping of equipment and work areas.
What You'll Need
  • High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED).
  • Six (6) + years of progressive experience operating a motor grader, or equivalent experience in an operational or service-related field. A combination of experience and training will be considered.
  • Prior experience operating CAT 150 & 160M graders and/or John Deere 772GP & 872GP graders with grade control.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to interact professionally using courtesy, tact, and discretion when addressing requests, complaints, and clarifications.
  • Physical ability to perform required job duties, including lifting in excess of 50 lbs. and repeatedly entering and exiting equipment and trucks.

Preference given to:

  • Candidates holding a Class 3Q Alberta Driver’s License

  • Annual Salary Range depending upon relevant certifications, education, skills and experience
    • EO II: November 1 – March 31 ($72,701 - $80,412) / EO III: April 1 – October 31 ($80,361 – 89,324 Apr 2027 rate)
