Job summary

The County of Grande Prairie is seeking a Heavy Equipment Operator to maintain roads and operate backhoe, track hoe, grader, plow truck, and related machinery. The role involves GPS-guided operations, routine maintenance, and coordinating with crews.

This permanent, full-time position offers 44 hours per week, with shifts from 7:00am to 4:30pm and potential overtime or weekend work for winter plowing. Compensation includes an hourly rate of $36.48–$42.92 plus benefits.

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 diploma or equivalent with 5+ years equipment operation.
  • Valid Equipment Operators license.
  • Class 5 Driver’s License and clean abstract.
  • Experience with Trimble GPS or Earth Works is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Operate various heavy equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Dig borrow pits and drainage using tracked hoe.
  • Perform daily safety and maintenance checks.
  • Load trucks and follow GPS design and yard operations.
  • Maintain records of work performed and locations.
  • Communicate professionally with team and supervisors.
  • Participate in safety meetings.
  • Work overtime and night shifts in winter as needed.
  • Work in extreme weather conditions.

Job Description

Operates the backhoe, track hoe, crawler tractor, buggy, packer, grader, plow truck, gravel truck etc. to construct and maintain roads, load gravel/sand/salt trucks and for construction and maintenance projects. Operator may be generally assigned to one type of equipment but may operate other equipment from time to time and perform related duties.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • Operating various pieces of heavy equipment in a safe and appropriate manner.
  • Operating tracked hoe to dig borrow pits, drainage ditches and various other slope and elevation related work.
  • Cleaning, maintaining and securing all equipment as directed by legislation, policies and procedures.
  • Performing daily safety and maintenance checks.
  • Operating tracked hoe, loader and backhoe to load trucks, following GPS design and in-yard including snow removal.
  • Safely operating equipment in and around overhead lines and buried utilities.
  • Keeping detailed and accurate records of work completed (i.e. loads hauled and locations).
  • Communicating professionally with co-workers and supervisors.
  • Participating in safety meetings.
  • Dealing with members of the public in a courteous, respectful manner.
  • Performing labour or other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
  • Grade twelve diploma or equivalent, supplemented with five or more years in equipment operation.
  • An appropriate Equipment Operators license.
  • Class 5 Driver’s License and an acceptable driver’s abstract.
  • Tracked hoe experience with Trimble GPS or Earth Works program, considered an asset.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
  • Knowledge of construction equipment safety.
  • Knowledge of operation of track hoe, front-end loaders, dozers, graders and other pieces of heavy equipment.
  • Knowledge of GPS operations (Trimble, specifically Earth Works).
  • Knowledge of equipment maintenance and storage.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude with ability to perform routine equipment maintenance.
  • Exceptional organizational abilities with task prioritization, multi-tasking, use of timelines and time management techniques.
  • Strong work ethic.
  • Professional/mature demeanor under stressful situations.
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Able to deal with people sensitively, tactfully, diplomatically, and professionally at all times.
  • Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs. to complete heavy work and physical labour duties.
  • Ability and willingness to work overtime and/or night shift for plow snow in winter.
  • Ability to work in extreme weather conditions.

Shift Details

This position is permanent, full-time with shifts from 7:00am – 4:30pm, 5 days a week, for 44 hours per week. Some extended hours and/or weekends may be required to meet operational needs.

Hourly Rate
