PRIMARY FUNCTION

Genetics is a discipline within the field of Laboratory Medicine that deals with the analysis and interpretation of changes to DNA and RNA in blood and tissues. The test results are useful for detecting and diagnosing disease states, as well as determining prognosis and guiding therapy in both the somatic and germline settings.

Clinical Laboratory Geneticists work collaboratively with other members of the Clinical Laboratories, with faculty and staff from the Department of Pathology and Molecular Medicine, and other healthcare professionals. They are expected to build effective relationships with members of the health care team and to provide prompt and expert consultative services. Some of the regular activities include: providing case interpretation, scientific/technical oversight of genetic laboratory activities, monitoring compliance with Accreditation Canada Diagnostics requirements, participating in new test development and implementation, and participating in departmental, hospital and/or external committees.

The successful candidate will be board-certified or board-eligible as a Fellow of either the Canadian College of Medical Genetics (CCMG) or international equivalent in the areas of molecular and/or cytogenetics. The ideal candidate will have experience and be knowledgeable in constitutional genetics, somatic genetics, molecular and cytogenomic testing.

The successful candidate will demonstrate effective communication and leadership skills, and an ability to work in a fast paced, team-oriented environment. With a faculty appointment in the Department of Pathology and Molecular Medicine at Queen’s University, there will be ample opportunities to be actively engaged in teaching and research.

RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES INCLUDE:

  • Data interpretation for a wide variety of molecular and cytogenetic assays.
  • Clinical interpretation of results and consultation with clinicians, as needed.
  • Hospital wide call, when on service, to provide clinical relevance of the test data and to assist in clinical management of patients.

Quality and Utilization Improvement:

  • Quality initiatives to improve patient care and laboratory performance, based on scientific and medical best practices.
  • Development and maintenance of laboratory standard operating procedures.
  • Genetic testing stewardship, including test menu.
  • Clinical oversight of the Genetics laboratory.

Teaching and Education:

  • Teaching Residents and Fellows (i.e., from Pathology, Genetics, Pediatrics Hematology programs), Medical Laboratory Technologists, and students from Michener Institute or other educational organization.
  • Rounds, seminars, conferences, intramurally and extramurally.
  • Continuing education: maintenance of certification, participation at regular rounds, journal clubs and scientific meetings.

Research and Development:

  • Oversight of assay development.
  • Validation and verification of established and new assays.
