Job summary

Winnipeg School Division is seeking a Library Technician (Class IV) for a full-time, 10-month ongoing position. The role involves organizing and maintaining the school Library Learning Commons and supporting students and staff in information literacy and classroom learning.

  • Basic language skills in any language are assets (French, Cree, Anishinaabemowin, Spanish, Ukrainian, Tagalog, Hebrew, Punjabi).

Responsibilities

  • Library Circulation and Maintenance: process new materials, shelf and classify items, catalogue records, monitor circulation, weed collections, perform inventory, and support interlibrary loans.
  • Instructional Support: assist students and staff in locating information, demonstrate digital databases, provide Readers’ Advisory, create resource lists, inform about copyright.
  • Advocacy: create book displays and library programming reflecting the school community, liaise with school community, coordinate volunteers and student helpers.

This is a full-time, 10-month ongoing position.

Under the direction and supervision of the school principal and vice-principal, the Library Technician is responsible for the organization and maintenance of all aspects of the school Library Learning Commons.

Through the duties and qualifications listed below, the successful incumbent will support building cultures, environments, and practices that ensure that all students of Winnipeg School Division experience belonging, engagement and meaningful learning that will improve their life prospects and ensure they flourish in their catchment school.

Responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

Library Circulation and Maintenance
  • Processes all new materials for circulation.
  • Shelves and maintains collection following select classification systems, chiefly DDC.
  • Catalogues new items and maintains item records.
  • Circulates and monitors all library items (this includes watching for overdues, repairs etc.)
  • In collaboration with teaching staff, weeds the library collection.
  • Performs library inventory.
  • Performs interlibrary loans between schools within the division.
Instructional Support
  • Supports students in finding information and materials, both in print and online through regular book exchange offered to students.
  • Demonstrates use of digital databases.
  • Provides Readers’ Advisory for students and staff, for example reading aloud and book talks.
  • In collaboration with school staff, creates book/resource lists to support classroom learning.
  • With support from divisional library services, informs staff and students of current copyright legislation.
Advocacy
  • In collaboration with teaching staff, creates meaningful book displays, bulletin boards and library programing that reflect the school community.
  • Serves as a liaison between the Library Learning Commons and school community (administration, staff, and students) updating them with all current information regarding new items in the library, school library trends, and school library issues.
  • Coordinates library activities of community volunteers and student helpers.
Qualifications
  • Applicants must possess a Library and Information Technology Diploma or be currently enrolled in a Library Technician Diploma training program.
  • Ability to lift and carry equipment and books weighing between 10 kg and to climb stools/step ladders when shelving/retrieving books.
  • Basic language skills in any of the following languages is an asset: French, Cree, Anishinaabemowin, Spanish, Ukrainian, Tagalog, Hebrew, Punjabi.
