Job summary

The Timmins Native Friendship Centre (TNFC) is seeking a maternity leave position to design, develop, coordinate, facilitate, monitor and evaluate the urban Indigenous healthy living program based on community needs.

The role focuses on creating healthy lifestyle programming for children and youth aged 0-18, increasing access to healthy food for families and boosting physical activity through recreation and traditional activities.

Qualifications

  • Secondary degree or diploma in social services, sports and recreation, or related health/fitness program.
  • Ability to present educational workshops and facilitate groups.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with staff and community members.
  • Good judgment, adaptability and willingness to learn.
  • Willingness to work a 35-hour flexible week with at least 2 evenings per month.
  • Knowledge of Timmins Native Friendship Centre programs and services.
  • Minimum of three years of demonstrated work experience within an Indigenous organization or community.
  • Ability to speak Cree and/or Ojibwe an asset.
  • First aid/CPR level C, WHMIS, and food handlers’ certificate.
  • Clear criminal reference check and vulnerable persons check required.

Responsibilities

Job description

The Timmins Native Friendship Centre (TNFC) is an award-winning Friendship Centre in Ontario and Canada. The TNFC provides services and programs to support the cultural heritage of Indigenous peoples and assist in their inclusion and participation in urban life. We strive to improve the quality of life for urban Indigenous peoples living in the Timmins area by providing intervention, direct services, advocacy, and support in the areas of health, education, employment and training, culture, recreation, and social services.

Maternity Leave Position
Expectations

Worker will be responsible to design develop coordinate facilitate monitor and evaluate the urban indigenous healthy living program based on community needs and interests. To design and implement healthy lifestyle programming for children and youth aged 0-18 with the intent to increase access and availability of healthy food for children youth and families. Increase awareness and provide education on healthy food for children, youth and families. Increase children and youth physical activity rate through access to recreational physical fitness and sports activities. Increased recreation and sports activities that incorporate traditional cultural activities.

Qualifications
  • Secondary degree or diploma in social services sports and recreation or other health fitness related program
  • Must possess skills and experience in presenting educational workshops and facilitating groups.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with staff and community members
  • Good judgment adaptability and willingness to learn.
  • Willingness to work a 35-hour flexible week with a minimum of 2 evenings per month.
  • Salary range is $53,000-$58,000
  • To be knowledgeable of and to collaborate with community agencies and referral sources
  • Must have the ability to work as a collaborator and be capable of coordinating activities with other friendship centre programs.
  • Knowledge of the friendship centre movement its aims and objectives
  • Knowledge of Timmins native friendship centres programs and services
  • Minimum of three years of demonstrated and related work experience within an indigenous organization or community
  • Ability to speak Cree and or Ojibwe an asset.
  • Current standard first aid and CPR level C CPR, WHMIS, and food handlers’ certificate
  • Exceptional knowledge and ability to work proficiently with the company’s software packages e-mail and the Internet must possess A valid drivers license and have access to reliable vehicle ability to provide a clear criminal reference check and vulnerable persons check.
