Job summary

Learning Jungle is seeking a dedicated kitchen assistant to prepare and portion snacks and lunches, ensuring allergy safety and a clean, sanitary kitchen. You will support classroom activities and rotate for lunch coverage while maintaining organization and cleanliness in shared spaces.

Ideal candidates will hold a valid Food Handler Certificate, have childcare experience, and be prepared to complete a Vulnerable Sector Check within six months. Immunizations and First Aid CPR are preferred.

Qualifications

  • Must have a valid and current Food Handler Certificate.
  • Experience prepping nutritious meals and snacks with attention to allergies.
  • Within 6 months, obtain a Vulnerable Sector Check (Criminal Reference Check).
  • Health checks and immunizations up-to-date (2-step TB test).
  • Standard First Aid Certificate including Infant/Child CPR preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Portion and prep meals and snacks for children.
  • Deliver lunches and snacks to classrooms.
  • Maintain a clean and sanitized kitchen and dishes.
  • Follow allergies and dietary restrictions for each child.
  • Clean, mop, sweep, and perform light laundry and centre cleaning.
  • Assist in daily classroom activities and learning environments.
  • Attend staff meetings and training sessions.

Job description

Reporting to the Center Supervisor, the staff will portion/prep and deliver all snacks and lunches for the children and maintain a clean and sanitized kitchen. He/she will relieve staff for lunches and breaks and assist in the classroom as required. The staff will also support the learning objectives of children and assist in creating and managing a variety of learning environments and activities that will provide opportunities for children to develop to their fullest potential.

The successful candidate will be accountable for:
  • Receiving catered food, portioning/prepping meals accordingly
  • Delivering lunches and snacks to classrooms
  • Following allergies and dietary restrictions for individual children
  • Cleaning and sanitizing dishes
  • Maintaining a clean and organized kitchen
  • Weekly grocery shopping for the center snacks
  • Cleaning duties, including but not limited to sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, and laundry (center cleaning)
  • Lunch and classroom coverage
  • Work as a team member in the daily operations of the Center’s activities
  • Responsible for effective and practical care of all equipment, toys and supplies
  • Prepare and maintain a safe, clean, stimulating environment for children
  • Attend staff meetings and recommended training programs and conferences
The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications/skills:
  • Must have a valid and current Food Handler Certificate
  • Knowledge and experience prepping nutritious meals (Follows Food Guide) and snacks and pays close attention to allergies
  • Within 6 months - Valid Vulnerable Sector Check - Criminal Reference Check
  • Health Check - Immunizations up-to-date, within 6 months 2-step Tb Skin Test,
  • Valid Standard First Aid Certificate including Infant and child CPR
  • Professional experience in dealing with young children
  • Demonstrated understanding of and love for young children and enthusiasm for helping to maintain a happy, creative atmosphere in the classroom
