Pay Range: $21.66 - $24.27

VHA's Child and Family Support Worker (CFSW) is responsible for providing child care and home support to families caring for children from birth to 4 years, and recovering from a medical and/or crisis situation. They provide emotional support and guidance to parents struggling with mental health issues, e.g., postpartum depression. The CFSW helps families with activities including light housekeeping and child care ADLs.

Key Areas of Accountability:

  • Provides care to children aged 0-4 years, including activities of daily living (ADLs).
  • Provides physical and emotional support to parents recovering from health conditions, assisting with household routines and activities of daily living (such as light cleaning, laundry, child care).
  • Provides food planning and preparation, considering special diets if needed.
  • Ensures meals are nutritious and appropriate for dietary needs.
  • Performs infant care activities such as bathing, diaper changing, and stimulation.
  • May teach and demonstrate caring activities to help parents learn to perform them independently, encouraging autonomy.
  • Provides teaching and mentoring to first-time parents of newborns or children with special needs.
  • Offers emotional support and guidance in caring for multiple newborns, establishing routines and schedules.
  • Develops and plans educational and recreational activities suitable for the child's age.

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum 2 years' experience in childcare, or international training recognized in the field.
  • Certification in one of the following: Early Childhood Education Certificate/Diploma, Childcare Assistant, Mothercraft Childcare Certificate, Midwife, PSW Certificate recognized by the Ministry of Colleges and Universities or Ministry of Education, or international-trained Registered Nurse, Registered Practical Nurse, Midwife, or Physician.
  • First Aid/CPR certification is an asset.
  • At least 1 year of community-based experience.
  • Experience with mental health issues like postpartum depression is an asset.
  • Experience in developing age-appropriate educational and recreational activities.
  • Experience working with children with special needs, e.g., Autism.
  • Experience in teaching and mentoring new parents.
  • Experience in meal preparation, including assistance with nutrition.
