Calum’s Cabin is a place of comfort, connection, and care for families facing the unimaginable — a child’s cancer diagnosis. Founded in memory of Calum Speirs, our charity provides free holiday homes, hospital accommodation, and financial support to hundreds of families each year across the UK and Ireland.
We are now looking for our first-ever Chief Operating Officer (COO) to help shape the next stage of our growth. This is a unique opportunity to combine strategic leadership with meaningful, hands-on work, and to make a lasting difference in the lives of families when they need it most.
The Role
As Chief Operating Officer, you will work closely with the Board of Trustees to lead and deliver the day-to-day operations of Calum’s Cabin.

This role is primarily based at our Head Office in Edinburgh but is feasible for anyone in the central belt.
About the role
Families Outside is the only national charity in Scotland dedicated to supporting children and families affected by imprisonment. This senior management post leads the strategic development and implementation of the Family Support team, linking Regional Managers, Regional Family Support Coordinators, the national Helpline, and support to Prison Visitors’ Centres to improve outcomes for affected families across Scotland. The post holder will lead and inspire a team of managers to deliver high-quality, integrated support within our values framework (Compassion, Integrity, Tenacity, and Expertise). Undertaking significant projects, providing strategic leadership, and representing Families Outside are key components of this challenging role.
About you
You will need a proven relevant track record, possibly gained in various sectors, with experience at a senior level engaging with diverse stakeholders. You should have demonstrable experience managing and developing a family support service, working collaboratively to support families in criminal justice contexts, with child and adult protection, trauma-informed practice, and managing staff, students, and volunteers.
You thrive on working collaboratively, building relationships, and understanding the organization and sector quickly. You should be an effective communicator, comfortable with media and parliamentary bodies, and capable of persuading others. You will lead a team of 4–5 managers, report to the CEO, and contribute to local and national policy development.

We are seeking a Board Trustee with a legal background to support our governance and legal compliance. This voluntary role offers an initial 3-year term, with potential for renewal, and involves attending up to 5 Board meetings annually, participating in subcommittee meetings, and contributing strategically to the organization’s legal and governance matters.
