As the Chief Investment Officer, you will play a key role in shaping and delivering strategic investment and financial planning services for client accounts, managing over $3 billion in assets. To succeed in this role, you will:

  • Foster a collaborative, respectful, and high-performing team culture by actively engaging your team, coaching and mentoring staff at all levels, and supporting their growth and development to ensure continued excellence in client service and investment management.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain investment policies and financial plans tailored to diverse client needs.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with investment managers, brokers, custodians, and financial institutions.
  • Review and approve financial plans developed by your team, including those involving internal investment products, and oversee their successful implementation.
  • Lead procurement processes and negotiate service agreements that deliver value, quality, and strong outcomes.
  • Monitor changing market conditions and adjust investment strategies to meet evolving client needs.
  • Provide expert advice on financial planning, trust accounting, and tax matters.
  • Share your expertise by delivering investment and tax-related training to strengthen organizational knowledge and capacity.

What you bring to the team

Strategic Leadership and Management Skills

Investment and Financial Planning Expertise

  • Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation or an equivalent combination of education and practical experience in investments.
  • In-depth knowledge of investment products, portfolio management, financial planning, and market analysis.
  • Experience in developing and implementing customized financial plans and investment strategies for individuals or institutions.
  • Knowledge of financial, administrative, and procurement policies and directives to manage fiscal and material resources.
  • Proficiency with financial information and processing systems to oversee large volumes of investment transactions and data.
  • Skills in conducting investment research, providing strategic recommendations, and implementing process improvements for portfolio management.

Communication, Interpersonal, and Problem-Solving Skills

  • Experience in interacting with and providing services to vulnerable individuals with professionalism, empathy, and respect.
  • Strong communication skills to explain investment strategies clearly to clients, stakeholders, and team members.
  • Relationship-building skills to maintain collaborative partnerships with financial institutions and service providers.
  • Professionalism and diplomacy in navigating negotiations and discussions.
  • Analytical skills to identify and assess problems and recommend effective solutions.
  • Organizational skills to manage caseload assignments through analysis of historical data and workload optimization.

Operational Excellence and Organizational Development

  • Knowledge of financial, administrative, and procurement policies and directives to effectively plan and manage resources.
  • Understanding of legislation governing the control, management, and investment of funds and assets, with the ability to liaise effectively with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) on tax matters.
  • Expertise in project management principles and methodologies to guide the successful delivery of mandates and strategies.
  • Risk management knowledge to identify and mitigate service delivery risks.
  • Human resources knowledge to support organizational capacity building, including succession planning, talent management, organizational and job design, and labour relations management.
