Job summary

School District No. 73 is seeking candidates for a Certified Education Assistant (CEA) Relief Roster to support classrooms in Kamloops and nearby communities. The role involves assisting teachers, providing behavioral support, and helping with inclusive education programs.

Relief staff visit multiple schools, support staff and students, and participate in field trips and various activities across sites. Applicants should have appropriate education and a BC Driver's License.

Qualifications

• Grade 12 supplemented by a minimum of one year post-secondary education in a related field.
• Two years' proven previous work experience involving children with diverse abilities, preferably in an educational setting.
• Valid BC Driver's License.

Job description

School District No. 73 is currently accepting applications for our Certified Education Assistant (CEA) Relief Roster for Kamloops and the surrounding area (including Barriere, Chase, Heffley Creek, Logan Lake, Pinantan, Savona, Sun Peaks and Westwold).

Our relief staff fill in for our regular employees when they are away. As a relief employee you will have the opportunity to visit many of our schools and district sites, and support the staff and students of School District No. 73.

The Certified Education Assistant carries out a variety of tasks associated with the implementation of an individual or group education program while providing support for the behavioral and emotional needs of the student(s) assigned to them. Also provides input as part of a classroom team.

TYPICAL DUTIES:

• Assists classroom teacher in all aspects of daily classroom activities, including direct involvement with either individual or small groups of students with multiple learning difficulties where the predominant characteristic is behaviour that is unpredictable, unintentional and a result of a reflex action, orsmall groups of students who are totally dependent, require intrusive personal assistance on a daily basis and cannot assist you in any way for any of their needs.
• Provides assistance and support primarily for behaviour goals as required by the student(s) assigned to their care.
• Provides assistance and support for self-care/personal hygiene, including but not limited to toileting, diaper changes, catheterization, choking, oxygen administration, grand mal seizures and/or feeding, and other physical needs as required by the student(s) assigned to their care.
• Required to read, anticipate and manage behaviour that may be a result of medical diagnoses and/or pharmacological interventions.
• Provides direct supervision at all times and across all school settings.
• Provides for the mobility of student(s) assigned to their care in and around the school.
• Required to perform heavy lifting and/or restrain students.
• Assists with the development of various social, emotional and curriculum needs.
• Observes, monitors, records and provides feedback in areas identified as specific program goals.
• Prepares and modifies a variety of classroom materials as required.
• Assists students in the integration process.
• Provides noon hour supervision and other supervision as required.
• Participates in field trips and class activities/outings.
• Assists with the implementation and reinforcement of behavioural expectations and appropriate conduct.
• Interacts with parents, teachers and others on an as required basis.
• Required to follow all safe work procedures, participate in Occupational Health and Safety Training, and report any hazards in the workplace.
• Other assigned job related duties.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Grade 12 supplemented by a minimum of one (1) year post-secondary education in a related field.
• Two (2) years' proven previous work experience involving children with diverse abilities, preferably in an educational setting.
• Valid BC Driver's License.

Candidates with a combination of skills, education and experience and who demonstrate capacity and potential for a role as a CEA, and who are qualified to perform the full functions of the position based on the language of the respective job description, but do not possess a Certified Education Assistant Certificate, may be considered for Underfill Appointments.
