Job summary

Residence Carpenter, Facilities Services

Position No.: JOBPOST-2026-001323


Salary: $33.88 - $38.80 per hour


Competition ends: Thursday, August 20th at 4:00 pm


Reporting to the Manager, Residence Life, the Residence Carpenter supports the maintenance and repair of residence buildings. The Residence Carpenter performs skilled drywall repair, patching, painting, and texture matching to maintain institutional quality and aesthetic standards. The incumbent constructs, assembles, and repairs interior structures, wooden fixtures, furniture, doors, windows, and flooring systems.


The incumbent responds promptly to urgent work orders and provides repairs for safety hazards. The incumbent safely operates woodworking equipment, collaborates with other tradespeople, and maintains organized work areas. Additionally, the incumbent monitors material inventories, manages tool preservation, and tracks assets used for work orders to support ongoing residential operations.


Drywall Repair & Finishing



  • Repairs, patches, and replaces damaged drywall in walls, ceilings, and other structures.

  • Sands, primes, and paints a variety of surfaces to restore or improve appearance.

  • Ensures all repairs meet quality, safety, and aesthetic standards.

  • Performs texture matching and finishing to blend repairs with existing surfaces.

  • Builds, assembles, and repairs wooden fixtures, frameworks, furniture, doors, and windows.

  • Performs the installation or repair of trim, moulding, and other finishing elements.

  • Repairs or replaces small sections of flooring.

  • Installs and repairs ceiling systems, including suspended acoustic ceiling grids and tiles.

  • Fabricates and installs specialized, custom-built furniture and components based on architectural specifications and shop drawings.

  • Constructs and repairs interior structures, including partitions, shelves, cabinets, and countertops.


Safety Compliance & Site Support



  • Operates carpentry and woodworking equipment safely, including planers, jointers, routers, power saws, and drill presses.

  • Follows all safety procedures, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

  • Maintains clean, organized, and safe work areas.

  • Responds promptly and professionally to urgent work orders, including temporary fixes for safety hazards, within an active institutional environment.


Material & Equipment Care



  • Maintains and organizes tools, equipment, and materials for drywall, painting, and carpentry work.

  • Monitors inventory and communicates material needs for upcoming projects.

  • Ensures proper handling and storage of paints, compounds, and hazardous materials.

  • Tracks materials used for work orders.


Other Duties



  • Performs other duties within the professional scope and skill level of the position, in full compliance with applicable legislation, university policies, and collective agreements.

  • Two (2) year College Certificate and/or Trade Certificate in Carpentry or in a related field.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field is preferred.

  • Five (5) to ten (10) years of experience as a Carpenter.

  • General Carpenter Journeyman Trade Certification is preferred or equivalent years of experience as a carpenter.

  • Experience in Work Order Tracking Software (Megamation) is considered an asset.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Demonstrated problem-solving, attention to detail, and conflict resolution skills.

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills; ability to meet deadlines.

  • Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills.

  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.

  • Proven ability to work independently with minimal supervision, take initiative, and collaborate effectively within a team environment.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage large-scale construction or renovation projects from the planning phase to completion.

  • Ability to work fluently (verbal and written) in both official languages, French and English, is an asset.


The official University hours of operation shall be from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, during, and including, the months from September to April, and from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m Monday through Friday during and including May to August., amounting to thirty-three and three-quarter (33.75) hours per week.
