Job summary

Algoma Central Corporation seeks a Captain to manage safety, operations and crew aboard a dry bulk vessel. You will oversee cargo operations, environmental protection and the owner’s commercial interests with authority to make safety decisions under the ISM framework.

Ideal candidates hold a Master Mariner qualification or similar, have GOC–GMDSS, and STCW certifications. This is a senior, non-unionized management role requiring leadership and regulatory compliance across Canada.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years recent experience on dry bulk vessels.
  • Experience with Safety Management Systems (SMS).
  • Strong leadership capabilities and team management.
  • Working knowledge of English is required.

Responsibilities

  • Represent the Company aboard the vessel and safeguard the Corporation's interests.
  • Ensure safety of crew, contractors, environment, cargo, and vessel operations.
  • Make decisions on safety and pollution prevention per regulatory frameworks.
  • Comply with Canada Shipping Act, Canada Labour Code, ISM Code, and ISO standards.

Job Duties

The Captain is the Company’s management representative aboard the vessel and they are charged with the responsibility to support and protect the best interests of the Corporation in all areas of their job role.

The Captain’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the safety of the crew and any contractors, protection of the environment, the safe operation of the vessel and its cargo, and protection of the owner’s commercial interests. The Captain has the overriding authority and responsibility to make decisions with respect to safety and pollution prevention. The Captain is expected to perform his or her duties in accordance with the Canada Shipping Act and Regulations, Canada Labour Code, Company Policies and Procedures, and includes fulfillment of the Company’s committed requirements of the ISM Code and the ISO 9001, 14001 and 45001 Standards.

This is a management position and is non-unionized.

Qualifications
  • Master Mariner (preferred) or Master, Near Coastal Certificate of Competency issued by Transport Canada.
  • General Operator’s License (GOC – GMDSS).
  • Pilotage Certificate within the designated GLPA areas (preferred).
  • Certificate of Proficiency in STCW Basic Safety.
  • Certificate of Proficiency in STCW Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats other than Fast Rescue Boats.
  • Certificate of Proficiency in STCW Advanced Fire Fighting.
  • Ship Security Officer.
  • Marine Medical Care (preferred).
  • Bridge Resource Management.
  • ECDIS training with proficiency in TRANSAS type (preferred).
  • Valid Canadian Passport or Canadian Permanent Residency.
  • Valid US C1/D Visa, if required.
Skills, Abilities and Experience
  • Minimum 2 years recent experience working on dry bulk vessels
  • Experience with Safety Management Systems
  • Excellent leadership skills
  • Knowledge of English language at a working level is required
