Job summary

The St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation is seeking a highly experienced professional to maintain the Seaway System’s integrity. You will inspect vessels, ensure compliance with regulations, and provide expert maritime guidance to internal teams.

A strong focus on stakeholder coordination and enforcement under the Canada Marine Act is essential. This permanent, full-time role offers a hybrid work model, a 37.5-hour workweek, and a competitive compensation package including a defined

Qualifications

  • Holds post-secondary technical education.
  • Minimum of eight years of operational experience.
  • Valid Master Mariner certificate for Canadian vessels or valid Chief Engineer certificate.
  • Enforcement Officer qualification under the Canada Marine Act.
  • Extensive knowledge of marine legislation, regulations, practices, and vessel types.
  • Knowledge of marine surveying, inspections, and accident investigation.
  • Proficiency in French and English, both oral and written.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect vessels to ensure compliance with rules and regulations.
  • Conduct inspections and analyze/report information on accidents, incidents, and violations.
  • Provide subject matter expertise to various departments as required.
  • Coordinate with Owners, Agents, Masters, Classification Surveyors and Underwriters, Pilotage, Transport Canada–Marine Safety, and other agencies.
  • Monitor and report on vessel safety, security, and compliance data.
  • Perform enforcement duties as a designated Enforcement Officer under the Canada Marine Act.

Your Responsibilities
  • Inspect vessels to ensure customer compliance with the rules and regulations governing the St. Lawrence Seaway System.
  • Conduct inspections and analyze and report information related to accidents, incidents, and violations.
  • Provide subject matter expertise to various SLSMC departments as required.
  • Liaise and coordinate with external stakeholders, including Owners, Agents, Masters, Classification Surveyors and Underwriters, Pilotage, Transport Canada–Marine Safety, and other government agencies.
  • Monitor and report on vessel safety, security, and compliance data.
  • Perform enforcement duties as a designated Enforcement Officer under the Canada Marine Act.
Your profile
  • Holds post‑secondary technical education;
  • Minimum of eight (8) years of operational experience;
  • Hold a valid Certificate of Competency as a Master Mariner for Canadian vessels or a valid Certificate of Competency as a Chief Engineer.
  • Enforcement Officer qualification under the Canada Marine Act;
  • Extensive knowledge of marine legislation, regulations, practices, and the operation and specifications of various vessel types;
  • Specific knowledge in marine surveying, inspections, and accident investigation;
  • Knowledge of applicable procedures, rules, standards, and safe work practices for performing duties
  • Proficiency in French and English, both oral and written, to communicate effectively with captains and stakeholders;
  • Valid Class G (Ontario) or Class 5 (Québec) driver’s licence with an insurable driving record;
  • Eligible to obtain Marine Transportation Security Clearance.
