Job summary

The St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation is seeking a Canal Services Technician - Electrical in St. Catharines, Ontario.

You will perform maintenance, control system tasks, and respond to breakdowns to ensure safe vessel transit and infrastructure operation. Qualified applicants have an apprenticeship or DEP in Electricity, valid electrical licenses, and 2–5 years in industrial maintenance with PLC and variable speed drives.

Qualifications

• Apprenticeship program or equivalent in Ontario or DEP in Electricity (Quebec).
• Valid electrician certification (Ontario or Quebec).
• 2–5 years in industrial maintenance, especially control systems and electrical equipment, PLCs and VSDs.

Responsibilities

• Complete and record maintenance work orders; respond to breakdowns to minimize navigation disruptions.
• Operate lock and bridge equipment, vessel mooring and monitoring, water level monitoring.
• Maintain transit data in electronic systems and ensure safety of facilities.

Salary range: $43.90/hour (min) to $CAN49,68/hour* (max) (*After completing the training program)

Hours of work: 40 per week, rotating day and night shifts, 12-hour shifts

Your Responsibilities

• Complete and record work orders related to maintenance, and respond to breakdowns to minimize navigation interruptions;
• Perform all activities related to vessel transit and infrastructure, including locks and bridges equipments operations, vessel mooring, and water level monitoring;
• Record and maintain vessel passage data in electronic systems;
• Carry out all tasks related to internal maintenance and civil engineering work within the lock sector;
• Perform all activities related to the safety of operational facilities, in compliance with safety regulations and standards.

Your profile

• Recognized apprenticeship program or equivalent in Ontario or Diplôme d’études professionnelles (DEP) in Electricity from Quebec;
• Hold a valid electrician certification (Licence C in Quebec, Licence 309A – Construction and Maintenance Electrician, or 442A – Industrial Electrician in Ontario);
• Two (2) to five (5) years of experience in an industrial environment, particularly in maintenance of control systems and electrical equipment, with hands-on experience in programmable logic controllers (PLC) and variable speed drives;
• Strong knowledge of soft starters, variable speed drives, Ethernet, remote I/O devices, and fiber optic communication methods and equipment;
• Proficiency in PLC programming (relay logic and IEC language) and operator workstation software;
• Understanding of procedures, rules, regulations, standards, and safe work practices applicable to task execution;
• Sound judgment, strong analytical skills, and the ability to make appropriate decisions;
• Eligible for marine transportation security clearance;
• Availability to undergo a medical examination, functional capacity evaluation, and drug screening test;
• Valid driver’s license (Class G in Ontario or Class 5 in Quebec) and an insurable driving record;
• Ability to work a rotating schedule of 12-hour shifts (day and night);
• Ability to work at heights, in confined spaces, near open water, and in deep areas;
• Strong verbal and written communication skills in English;
• Proficiency with computer programs and related software (MS Office and SAP).

Role

The Canal Services Technician - Electrical is responsible to execute activities related to the passage of vessels through a structure, complete regular maintenance tasks and respond to breakdowns, in order to ensure the safe, secure and efficient transit of vessels.

Responsibilities

• Complete and record work orders related to maintenance and respond to breakdowns to minimize disruption to navigation.
• Perform all activities related to the passage of vessels and structures, including operating lock and bridge equipment, vessel mooring & monitoring, and monitoring water levels.
• Record and maintain transit data in electronic systems.
• Perform all tasks related to general housekeeping and civil work of the lock areas.
• Perform all activities related to security of the operational facilities, in compliance with the applicable security requirements.
• Apply safe work methods in compliance with corporate safety programs and applicable legislation.

Experience And Knowledge

• Two (2) to five (5) years experience in an industrial environment maintaining controls and electrical equipment, especially in programmable logic controls and variable speed motor controls.
• Knowledge of soft starters/variable speed drives, ethernet, remote I/O and fiber optics communication methods and equipment.
• Familiar with PLC programming (ladder and IEC languages) and operator workstation software.
• Knowledge of applicable procedures, standards and safe work practices related to the operation and maintenance of lock and bridge controls.

Education

• Diplôme d’études professionnelles - DEP (Québec) OR completion of an apprenticeship program or equivalent (ON) in Electricity

Certifications

• Provincial Certificate of Qualification as an Electrician - Construction and Maintenance Electrician License (309A) or Industrial Electrician License (442A) in Ontario OR License C in Quebec
• Completion of Canal Structures Operator training program
• Radio Restricted Operators Certificate (Maritime)
• Valid Class G (ON) or Class 5 (QC) driver’s license and insurable driving record
