Job summary

CPKC is seeking a strategic Benefits Strategist to shape the design, governance, and evolution of Canadian benefit programs supporting thousands of employees across union and non-union populations. You will leverage data, market insights, and best practices to drive wellbeing, align with business objectives, and ensure program sustainability.

This role focuses on analytical insights, vendor management, and collaboration with HR leaders and stakeholders to deliver impactful benefits strategies

Qualifications

  • 5+ years in Benefits Strategy or related field.
  • Experience designing, analyzing, and managing employee benefits programs in a large complex organization.
  • Strong analytical thinking to translate data into strategic recommendations.
  • Ability to lead projects, drive process improvements, and influence stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Lead strategic oversight and evolution of Canadian disability programs.
  • Evaluate enhancements to health and wellness benefits via benchmarking and data.
  • Develop executive-level reporting and dashboards for decision-making.

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

CPKC is seeking a strategic and forward-thinking Benefits Strategist to join our Canadian Benefits team. This role offers an exciting opportunity to influence the design, governance, and evolution of benefit programs that support thousands of employees across unionized, non-unionized, and retiree populations.

As a key member of the team, you will leverage data, market insights, and industry best practices to drive innovative benefits strategies that enhance employee wellbeing, support business objectives, and ensure long-term program sustainability. You will act as a trusted advisor to leaders, collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, and help shape the future direction of our Canadian benefits programs.

This role is ideal for a benefits professional with experience in benefits strategy, program design, vendor management, and analytics who is looking to expand their impact and grow toward a future leadership opportunity.

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:
  • Lead the strategic oversight and continuous evolution of CPKC's Canadian disability programs, including Short-Term Disability, Weekly Indemnity Benefits, and Long-Term Disability, ensuring alignment with organizational priorities, evolving workforce needs, and legislative requirements
  • Evaluate and recommend enhancements to health, wellness, and disability programs through market benchmarking, industry trends, and data-driven insights
  • Assess the impact of benefit plan design changes and develop strategic recommendations to improve employee experience, program effectiveness, and cost sustainability
  • Analyze benefits utilization, demographic, and cost data to identify emerging trends, risks, and opportunities
  • Develop executive-level reporting, dashboards, and strategic insights to support informed decision-making and long-term benefits planning
  • Provide analytical and financial support for collective bargaining initiatives, forecasting, and program cost modelling
  • Serve as a senior benefits subject matter expert and trusted advisor to HR leaders, employees, union representatives, and business stakeholders
  • Build strong partnerships with external vendors and service providers, ensuring accountability, service excellence, and achievement of contractual obligations
  • Lead the resolution of complex benefits issues while identifying opportunities to improve processes and enhance service delivery
  • Ensure benefit plans are administered in accordance with plan documents, legislation, collective agreements, and organizational policies
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives that modernize benefits administration, enhance processes, and improve employee experiences
  • Partner with technology teams and vendors on system enhancements, integrations, testing, and implementation initiatives to support operational excellence and data integrity
  • Support the annual FlexBenefits enrollment process, including strategy execution, communications, testing, auditing, and stakeholder engagement
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
  • Group Benefits Associate (GBA), Compensation Management Specialist (CMS), Retirement Plans Associate (RPA) and/or Certified Employee Benefit Specialist (CEBS) Designation is preferred
  • 5+ years of progressive experience in Benefits Strategy, Benefits Management, or a related field
  • Demonstrated experience designing, analyzing, and managing employee benefits programs in a large, complex organization
  • Strong analytical skills with experience translating data into strategic recommendations and business decisions
  • Experience managing vendor relationships and influencing multiple stakeholders across varying levels of an organization
  • Demonstrated ability to lead projects, drive process improvements, and implement benefit program enhancements
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and relationship management skills

Management Conductor Program

Becoming a qualified conductor or locomotive engineer is the single best way for a management employee to learn the business at CPKC. You may be required to obtain a certification or to maintain your current certification/qualification as a conductor or locomotive engineer.
