Position summary

The new Surgical Tower at Toronto Western Hospital is UHN’s largest capital project in history. Rising 15 storeys with 20 new operating rooms and 82 in-patient rooms, the Surgical Tower will add 20% - 50% in surgical capacity, and utilize the latest innovation to provide the very best care. Purpose built alongside patient partners, this generational build will transform the future of surgery in Canada.

To bring this project to life, UHN Foundation has launched a $300 million campaign to fund the equipment, education, and other costs that will bring the Surgical Tower to life. Led by a cabinet of 30+ prominent business and philanthropy leaders, the campaign will unite the city to make a lasting impact.

We are seeking Campaign Director to help achieve this ambitious goal. In partnership with the Senior Campaign Director, they will build campaign planning, fundraising priority setting and the case for support. They manage and partner with the campaign cabinet, focused on major and transformational gifts greater than $100,000 with a focus on $1M+ contributions.

The Campaign Director will be accountable for raising roughly $5M in cash and $10M in pledges annually in support of the campaign, contributing to the overall Foundation fundraising goals.

The ideal candidate is a senior fundraising professional (10+ years major gift experience) who has experience working in health and / or healthcare philanthropy. The Campaign Director will be self-driven, but also skilled in collaborating with colleagues with different functions across an organization.

The Campaign Director applies a high degree of emotional intelligence and integrity to their interactions with donors, senior volunteers, and Foundation and hospital colleagues. They take a strategic approach to accomplishing goals and find creative ways to solve problems, with an ability to effectively communicate with a variety of stakeholders.

Accountabilities

  • Build strong relationships with medical and research leaders to understand their institute’s vision and need for philanthropy
  • Identify potential sources of prospects and partners including individuals, foundations, and corporations
  • Ensure appropriate research is undertaken to provide background information on prospects to confirm that the prospect has the capacity to be a major donor
  • Engage and build relationships with new prospects and solicit support for approved fundraising priorities
  • Establishes own priorities among the numerous responsibilities and projects
  • Work with members of the Major Gifts Team, the hospital community, and volunteers, to develop tailored programs / projects which are designed to gain / enhance the interest and involvement of the prospect
  • Implement and utilize moves management to track performance indicators
  • Consult with others involved with a prospect, determine the appropriate timing for solicitation
  • Coach and lead campaign cabinet volunteers in prospect identification, engagement, and cultivation
  • Develop case for support, priorities, proposals, and stewardship reports for all donors in coordination with the communications team
  • Support other elements of fundraising related to the programs including collaborating with the events and annual program teams
  • Perform cross‐functional duties, as assigned
  • Develop and track performance goals in consultation with the Associate Vice President, Major Gifts

Experience

  • A relevant 4-year degree or, a relevant 3-year degree / diploma combined with a professional certification or, an equivalent combination of formal education and relevant experience.
  • 7 to 10 years of experience within a charitable / not-for-profit organization, in leading, motivating senior volunteers including board members, major gift fundraising, and the desire to contribute and grow a successful and sustained Major Gifts capability.
  • Demonstrated major gift development experience with $1,000,000+ gifts including working closely with senior volunteers and institution leadership.
  • Experienced in health and / or healthcare fundraising.
  • Past experience in campaigns and / or managing fundraising volunteers is a significant asset.
  • 5 years of experience as a people leader.
  • Exceptional personal and communication skills.
  • Evidence of leadership and initiative, tact, diplomacy, attention to detail, creativity.
  • Proven ability to motivate and manage others, i.e., volunteers and staff.
  • Proficiency in the full suite of Microsoft Office products and internet tools. Familiarity with and aptitude for Raiser’s Edge NXT or similar database, moves management reporting required.
  • Experience in a large, complex not-for-profit healthcare organization is a definite asset.
  • CFRE certification is an asset.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and results oriented environment
  • Fast pace, service and results oriented environment.
  • The Foundation has a hybrid work model. Staff will be required to have a safe home office set-up 1-2 days per week and will be in office for 3-4 days per week, (specifics to be planned with your manager.)
  • Ability to work cooperatively with colleagues in all positions throughout the Foundation.
  • Shared commitment and support of the overall Foundation goals.
