Job summary

The Municipality of North Cowichan is seeking a Maintenance Worker (Casual) for the Cowichan Aquatic Centre (CAC). The role focuses on the mechanical operation of the aquatic and fitness facility, with duties including planning, directing and coordinating work, and potential deployment to other tasks as needed.

Required are Grade 12, 2+ years in facility maintenance, Pool Operator Level II (or higher), PoolSafe, First Aid CPR-C, WHMIS, and a valid BC Driver's license.

Qualifications

• Grade 12 completion.
• Minimum two years' experience in building maintenance in aquatic/fitness facilities.
• Valid Pool Operators Level II or higher certificate, PoolSafe, First Aid CPR-C, Building Service Worker, WHMIS.
• Possession of a valid BC Class 5 Driver's License with clean abstract.
• Ability to plan, direct and coordinate work activities; supervise staff; set methods and priorities.
• Experience with requisitions, monitoring expenditures and lifecycle planning.
• Strong communication, public relations, problem solving, scheduling, leadership and policy enforcement.
• Experience with Windows networked environment and Corel/MS Office and facility booking software.
• Ability to perform self-directed facility repairs (plumbing, HVAC, carpentry, painting, tiling, minor electrical).
• Knowledge of pool filtration, water balancing, HVAC, chemical feeds, water quality monitoring, fitness equipment upkeep.
• Independent judgement with minimal supervision; awareness of liability risks.
• Commitment to WorkSafe BC and related safety regulations; hands-on, physically demanding role.
• Ability to work varying hours including shifts and weekends.

The successful candidate will personally perform a broad range of duties in the ongoing daily and long-term planning, management and control of all aspects of the mechanical operation of a diverse aquatics and fitness facility. Deployment to other duties may be required from time to time.

Required Skills, Qualifications and Abilities:

• Completion of Grade 12.
• Must have a minimum of two (2) years of experience in all facets of a building maintenance position in an aquatics and/or fitness facility environment.
• Possession of a valid Pool Operators Level II (or higher) certificate, PoolSafe certification, safety orientated first aid including CPR level 'C', Building Service Worker course and a WHMIS certificate.
• Possession and maintenance of a valid Class 5 B.C. Driver's License; a satisfactory current driver's abstract will be required.
• Demonstrable ability to assist in planning, directing, guiding and coordinating the work activities of employees; assigning and monitoring work duties and responsibilities; establishing and modifying work methods, schedules and priorities while supporting ongoing training and skill development.
• Basic experience and ability in preparing requisitions for supplies, materials and equipment, monitoring maintenance expenditures and planning for efficient lifecycling of equipment.
• In possession of good skills in communication, public relations, problem solving, scheduling work, team leadership, addressing co-worker and public concerns and enforcing policies and procedures.
• Demonstrable skills with Windows networked environment, including the practical use of Corel Suite or Microsoft Office Suite of programs, email software and facility booking software.
• Demonstrable ability to undertake self-directed facility repairs, including plumbing, HVAC systems, fitness equipment, carpentry, painting, tiling, and minor electrical with the operation of power tools.
• Demonstrable ability and knowledge in the operation of pool filtration equipment, water balancing, HVAC systems, chemical feed systems, water quality monitoring equipment, fitness equipment and overall facility maintenance with the goal of excellent facility and equipment lifecycling planning and operation.
• Independence of judgment, and capability of working under minimal supervision recognizing and addressing liability risks.
• Working knowledge of and commitment to WorkSafe BC, Ministry of Health and the BC Safety Authority regulations and safety procedures and other related regulatory requirements as related to the safe operation of an aquatic and fitness facility.
• The position is designated to be hands-on, as a result it may be physically demanding.
• Ability to work a variety of hours, which will include shift and weekend work.
