Job summary

The Municipality of North Cowichan invites applications for a casual Maintenance Worker at the Cowichan Aquatic Centre. You will perform a broad range of mechanical and maintenance duties to ensure safe and reliable facility operation.

Required qualifications include Grade 12, 2+ years in maintenance at aquatic/fitness facilities, and relevant certificates (Pool Operators II, PoolSafe, First Aid CPR-C, Building Service Worker, WHMIS). A BC Class 5 license is needed.

Qualifications

  • Completion of Grade 12.
  • Minimum 2 years in building maintenance at aquatic/fitness facilities.
  • Valid Pool Operators Level II / PoolSafe; First Aid with CPR C; Building Service Worker; WHMIS.
  • Valid Class 5 BC Driver's Licence and clean driving record.
  • Ability to direct and coordinate maintenance staff; set methods, schedules and priorities.
  • Experience with requisition prep, budgeting and lifecycle planning for equipment.
  • Strong communication, public relations, problem solving, scheduling, team leadership and enforcing procedures.
  • Proficiency with Windows networked environment, Corel or MS Office, email and booking software.
  • Ability for self-directed repairs including plumbing, HVAC, carpentry, painting, tiling and minor electrical work.
  • Knowledge of pool equipment operation, water balancing, HVAC, chemical feed, water quality monitoring and lifecycle planning.
  • Independent judgment and ability to work with minimal supervision and address liability risks.
  • Commitment to WorkSafe BC, Health Ministry and BC Safety Authority regulations.
  • The role is hands-on and may be physically demanding.
  • Ability to work varied hours including shifts and weekends.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily and long-term mechanical operations of a multi-facility aquatics centre.
  • Plan, manage and control maintenance activities; assign and monitor tasks.
  • Coordinate with staff and manage training and skill development.
  • Prepare requisitions for supplies and monitor maintenance expenditures.
  • Maintain safety procedures and regulatory compliance for aquatic facilities.
  • Perform repairs across plumbing, HVAC, carpentry, painting and minor electrical work.
  • Operate and monitor pool filtration, water quality and related systems.

Job description

The Municipality of North Cowichan (population 31,900) is located in the beautiful Cowichan Valley on Southern Vancouver Island, between Nanaimo and Victoria. The successful candidate will personally perform a broad range of duties in the ongoing daily and long-term planning, management and control of all aspects of the mechanical operation of a diverse aquatics and fitness facility. Deployment to other duties may be required from time to time.

Required Skills, Qualifications and Abilities:
  1. Completion of Grade 12.
  2. Must have a minimum of two (2) years of experience in all facets of a building maintenance position in an aquatics and/or fitness facility environment.
  3. Possession of a valid Pool Operators Level II (or higher) certificate, PoolSafe certification, safety orientated first aid including CPR level 'C', Building Service Worker course and a WHMIS certificate.
  4. Possession and maintenance of a valid Class 5 B.C. Driver's License; a satisfactory current driver's abstract will be required.
  5. Demonstrable ability to assist in planning, directing, guiding and coordinating the work activities of employees; assigning and monitoring work duties and responsibilities; establishing and modifying work methods, schedules and priorities while supporting ongoing training and skill development.
  6. Basic experience and ability in preparing requisitions for supplies, materials and equipment, monitoring maintenance expenditures and planning for efficient lifecycling of equipment.
  7. In possession of good skills in communication, public relations, problem solving, scheduling work, team leadership, addressing co-worker and public concerns and enforcing policies and procedures.
  8. Demonstrable skills with Windows networked environment, including the practical use of Corel Suite or Microsoft Office Suite of programs, email software and facility booking software.
  9. Demonstrable ability to undertake self-directed facility repairs, including plumbing, HVAC systems, fitness equipment, carpentry, painting, tiling, and minor electrical with the operation of power tools.
  10. Demonstrable ability and knowledge in the operation of pool filtration equipment, water balancing, HVAC systems, chemical feed systems, water quality monitoring equipment, fitness equipment and overall facility maintenance with the goal of excellent facility and equipment lifecycling planning and operation.
  11. Independence of judgment, and capability of working under minimal supervision recognizing and addressing liability risks.
  12. Working knowledge of and commitment to WorkSafe BC, Ministry of Health and the BC Safety Authority regulations and safety procedures and other related regulatory requirements as related to the safe operation of an aquatic and fitness facility.
  13. The position is designated to be hands-on, as a result it may be physically demanding.
  14. Ability to work a variety of hours, which will include shift and weekend work.
