Business Development Manager, Insurance

About Our Client

The client is an established New Brunswick-based mutual insurance organization with a proud history spanning more than 75 years. Providing property and casualty insurance solutions to individuals and businesses across the province, the organization has built its reputation on practical service, sound underwriting, and lasting relationships with policyholders, broker partners, and the communities it serves. With a strong local presence and a commitment to maintaining a responsive, relationship-driven approach to insurance, the organization continues to evolve its business strategy and explore new opportunities for sustainable growth. Its operations also include an established insurance brokerage, providing a broader presence within the New Brunswick insurance marketplace. This newly created leadership opportunity offers an exciting chance to help shape the organization's future growth strategy. Reporting directly to the President & CEO and working as part of the management team, the Business Development Manager will have a broad mandate encompassing broker relationships, distribution development, marketing, and strategic business development. For an experienced insurance professional who enjoys building relationships, identifying opportunities, and making a meaningful impact, this is an opportunity to take ownership of an important function and help influence the organization's direction.

Key Responsibilities
  • Business Development & Growth Strategy: Identify, evaluate, and develop opportunities for profitable growth across the property and casualty insurance market. Build and execute business development initiatives that support the organization's long-term strategic objectives. Work with senior leadership to establish growth priorities, assess opportunities, and move approved initiatives forward.
  • Broker & Distribution Relationships: Build, strengthen, and maintain relationships with existing and prospective insurance broker partners throughout New Brunswick. Identify opportunities to enhance the broker experience, strengthen distribution partnerships, and expand the organization’s market presence. Represent the organization at broker meetings, industry events, and other external engagements, serving as a knowledgeable and trusted ambassador.
  • Marketing & Market Positioning: Lead marketing, branding, and external communications initiatives to strengthen the organization’s visibility and competitive positioning. Oversee the development and execution of marketing strategies, including digital presence and external messaging. Identify opportunities to better communicate the organization’s value proposition to brokers, policyholders, and other stakeholders.
  • Market Intelligence & Strategic Partnerships: Monitor industry trends, competitor activity, and emerging market opportunities, providing valuable insights to senior leadership. Develop strategic partnerships and external relationships that support business development and enhance the organization’s position in the marketplace. Collaborate with Underwriting and other internal departments to assess opportunities and implement growth initiatives.
  • Leadership & Organizational Strategy: Contribute as an active member of the management team, participating in strategic planning, business development, and broader organizational initiatives. Establish priorities for the Growth & Distribution function, taking ownership of initiatives and communicating progress and results. Work collaboratively across the organization to ensure business development activities align with operational capabilities and overall company objectives.
Qualifications
  • Education & Experience: Relevant experience within the property and casualty insurance industry, ideally in business development, broker distribution, marketing, brokerage, or an insurer-side environment. A strong understanding of the Canadian insurance marketplace and the dynamics of insurer-broker relationships. Experience developing strategic business relationships and identifying opportunities for sustainable business growth. Relevant post-secondary education is preferred but not mandatory. CIP, FCIP, or other relevant insurance designations would be considered an asset.
  • Technical Skills: A practical understanding of insurance distribution, business development strategies, and marketing principles. Experience developing and executing marketing and communications initiatives, including digital marketing and brand positioning. The ability to interpret market trends, assess business opportunities, and translate insights into actionable strategies. Established relationships within the Canadian property and casualty insurance industry would be a significant asset.
  • Key Competencies: Exceptional relationship-building and interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish credibility and influence across a variety of stakeholders. Strong business acumen, commercial judgment, and a strategic mindset. Excellent communication and presentation skills, with confidence representing the organization externally. A self‑directed, entrepreneurial approach, with the ability to work independently, establish priorities, and follow through on initiatives. A collaborative leadership style and the confidence to contribute at the senior management level. A hands‑on approach and willingness to take ownership of both strategic planning and day‑to‑day execution.
Compensation & Benefits
  • Competitive base salary of $80,000–$100,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
  • Eligibility to participate in a performance-based incentive plan.
  • Comprehensive group health and insurance benefits.
  • Registered pension plan with employer matching contributions.
  • Paid vacation, sick/personal days, and statutory holidays.
  • Car allowance and reimbursement of approved business expenses.
  • Paid volunteer time.
  • Professional development opportunities.
  • Flexible work arrangements and a supportive, collaborative work environment.
Work Arrangement & Travel

This is a flexible, somewhat remote-based opportunity, with the successful candidate ideally located in New Brunswick. While there is flexibility to work remotely, occasional in‑office days at the Sussex head office will be expected, generally one to two days per week. Regular travel throughout New Brunswick will also be required to visit the organization’s other offices, meet with broker partners, and attend industry events and meetings.
