About the Company
Our client is a well-established and growing interior design firm based in downtown Toronto. Known for delivering high-quality commercial and residential projects, they have built a strong reputation in the Greater Toronto Area. As part of their continued growth, they are seeking a hands-on controller to lead their accounting operations and support strategic financial decision-making.
About the Role
The controller will be responsible for managing all accounting and financial activities within the organization. This includes overseeing project accounting, budgeting, financial reporting, payroll, and compliance. You will play a key role in developing financial strategies, managing cash flow, and providing insight-driven recommendations to senior management. This role requires strong project management capabilities and experience in the interior design, engineering, or related industries.
Key Responsibilities
• Oversee and manage all functions of the accounting department.
• Administer and track work orders, invoices, and purchase orders.
• Maintain effective communication with clients, contractors, and suppliers.
• Perform project accounting, profitability analysis, and budget monitoring.
• Prepare and analyze project cash flow statements and financial working papers.
• Generate and maintain Work-In-Progress (WIP) reports and reconcile project accounts.
• Lead payroll administration and supervise accounts payable and receivable functions.
• Develop, implement, and enforce internal controls to safeguard company assets.
• Monitor and evaluate financial performance, ensuring accuracy and compliance.
• Provide strategic financial insights and guidance to senior management and clients.
• Oversee financial forecasting and manage business cash flow.
• Ensure compliance with applicable accounting standards, tax laws, and regulations.
• Manage overall business financial operations, including budgeting, audit preparation, and reporting.
Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field (master’s degree preferred).
• CPA designation (or equivalent) is highly desirable.
• Minimum of 15 years' experience as a controller or senior accountant.
• Prior experience in the interior design, architecture, or real estate development industries is preferred.
Required Skills
• Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial principles.
• Demonstrated success in project management within a financial context.
• Proficient in accounting software (QuickBooks) and Microsoft Excel.
• Experience in payroll, accounts payable/receivable, account analysis, and reconciliations.
• Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities.
• Exceptional leadership and team management abilities.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• High attention to detail with strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
• Experience implementing or improving accounting systems and internal controls.
