Job summary

Colonial Group in the Greater Toronto Area is seeking an experienced Building Electrical Designer to join our team. The role focuses on electrical design for commercial, residential, tenant, and industrial buildings, with emphasis on compliance with the Ontario Building Code and local utility standards.

You will develop drawings, perform load calculations, coordinate with multi-disciplinary teams, and participate in client meetings and project presentations to drive successful project outcomes.

Qualifications

• Minimum 3 years of experience in building electrical design.
• Diploma or degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology.
• Experience with GTA local requirements and utility standards (e.g., Toronto Hydro).
• Proficiency with AutoCAD; Revit/BIM strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

• Develop electrical designs, drawings, and specifications for building systems, including: Power distribution, Lighting and lighting controls, Fire alarm and life-safety systems, Emergency/backup power systems, Communications and low-voltage systems (as applicable)
• Prepare technical documentation using AutoCAD, Revit, and other design tools.
• Conduct load calculations, short-circuit analysis, and equipment sizing.
• Coordinate with mechanical, structural, architectural, and other design disciplines.
• Participate in client meetings, design presentations, and project coordination discussions.
• Review and interpret building codes, standards, and client requirements to ensure compliance.
• Provide support during construction, including responding to RFIs, reviewing shop drawings, and conducting site visits as required.
• Ensure design quality, accuracy, and adherence to project timelines.
• Collaborate with project managers and senior engineers to deliver projects efficiently.

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of three (3) years of experience in electrical design for commercial, residential, tenant, or industrial buildings, along with demonstrated experience participating in client meetings, coordination sessions, and project presentations. This role requires strong technical design skills, familiarity with Ontario Building Code and electrical standards, and the ability to work collaboratively with internal teams and external stakeholders.
