Job Title: Accounting Specialist

Location: Remote (with occasional travel to company offices as needed)

Department: Finance

Reports To: Chief Innovation Officer

Accounting Specialist

The Accounting Specialist will be responsible for handling day-to-day and general bookkeeping tasks for our Canada and US entities, along with other ad hoc accounting and financial requests from the Executive Group (EG). This role requires a strong understanding of accounting principles, excellent analytical skills, and the ability to work independently in a remote environment.

Your key responsibilities would include:

General Accounting:

  • Perform daily bookkeeping and accounting tasks including accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger entries, and bank reconciliations.
  • Ensure accurate and timely month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes.
  • Maintain and reconcile balance sheet and income statement accounts.
  • Prepare and post journal entries.
  • Quarterly tax filing
  • Manage and process general bookkeeping tasks for our Canada and US entities, ensuring compliance with local accounting standards and regulations.
  • Handle intercompany transactions and reconciliations.
  • Assist in the preparation of financial statements for Canada and US entities.
  • Ensure all financial records are accurate, up-to-date, and comply with US GAAP and Canadian accounting standards.
  • Prepare and analyze financial reports, budgets, and forecasts as required.
  • Assist in the preparation of quarterly and annual financial statements.
  • Support the Head of Finance with financial analysis and reporting for the Executive Group (EG).

Compliance and Audit:

  • Ensure compliance with internal controls, policies, and procedures.
  • Assist with internal and external audits, including the preparation of audit schedules and documentation.
  • Stay updated on changes in accounting regulations and standards.

Collaboration and Communication:

  • Work closely with cross-functional teams, including Finance, HR, and Operations, to ensure accurate and timely financial information.
  • Communicate effectively with team members and management to address any financial issues or discrepancies.

Ad Hoc Requests:

  • Respond to and manage ad hoc accounting and financial requests from the Executive Group (EG).
  • Provide financial data and analysis to support strategic decision-making.
  • Participate in special projects and process improvement initiatives as needed.

Bringing With You:

  • Proven experience in Accounts Receivable (AR) and Accounts Payable (AP), with a strong understanding of day-to-day bookkeeping functions.
  • Proficient in QuickBooks Online and Microsoft Excel; comfortable using modern accounting software and tools.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy in all financial tasks.
  • Ability to review and interpret Profit & Loss statements and balance sheets, identifying discrepancies or unusual activity.
  • Highly reliable in managing routine financial filings and documentation on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis.
  • Quick to learn new tools, processes, and systems; adaptable in a fast-paced, remote work environment.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills in both independent and team settings.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.

Nice to Have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • 3–5 years of experience in accounting, preferably within a multi-entity or cross-border environment.
  • CPA designation or equivalent certification.
  • Understanding of US GAAP and Canadian accounting standards.
  • Experience with financial reporting, budgeting, and analysis.
  • Familiarity with intercompany transactions and reconciliations.
