Bookkeeping Manager and Pod Lead

Remote – Canada

Role:

The Controller – Bookkeeping Manager and Pod Lead at Argento CPA plays a pivotal role in driving timely, accurate financials that power real business decisions. You’ll lead our internal accounting processes for a portfolio of high-performing clients — ensuring tight month-end closes, clean books, and proactive financial operations. This role is all about speed, quality, and clarity — so our CFOs can deliver strategic insights without delay.

You’ll act as a bridge between the bookkeeping team and the CFO, owning systems, reviews, training, and process improvement. If you love clean numbers, building systems, and helping founders get clarity, you’ll thrive here.

Most accounting firms stop at compliance. We don’t. We offer fractional CFO services, forecasts, pricing strategy, profitability analysis, and more — but none of that works without timely and reliable financials.

This role is the engine that makes that strategy possible:

• You’ll reduce month-end close time so CFOs can shift from cleanup to decision-making.
• You’ll train and elevate our bookkeeping team, so quality improves across the board.
• You’ll create financial systems and workflows that scale with our clients.
• You’ll help us set a new standard for how bookkeeping and Controller work supports real growth.

External Responsibilities:

• Act as the primary financial operations partner for a group of CFO-led client accounts.
• Oversee and review client bookkeeping files to ensure accuracy, completeness, and timeliness.
• Own and improve the month-end close checklist — with clear deadlines, team assignments, and reporting expectations.
• Train clients on tools like Dext, QBO, Plooto, Wagepoint/Knit, and build systems for consistent data flow.
• Track and ensure proper compliance with payroll tax and sales tax (e.g. GST/HST, PST).
• Collaborate with clients and CFOs to surface missing information, fix issues, and streamline processes.

Internal Responsibilities:

• Review team bookkeeping work with precision and speed.
• Lead quality control: flag gaps, enforce standards, and ensure each file is audit-ready.
• Improve workflows for transaction recording, categorization, reconciliations, and documentation.
• Support onboarding of new clients: chart of accounts setup, system mapping, and data migrations.
• Train and mentor junior staff — instilling discipline, structure, and judgment.
• Recommend and implement internal SOPs and automation opportunities.

Results We Expect:

• Month-end close completed within 10 business days across assigned clients.
• Zero unreconciled balances or material errors in reviewed files.
• 90%+ of clients submit receipts, payroll, and sales data on time — thanks to your systems and nudges.
• High internal team ratings (clarity, support, process improvement).
• Client financials delivered on time so CFOs can execute timely strategy calls.
• Consistent improvement in bookkeeping turnaround times, quality, and documentation.

What You Bring:

• 5+ years of experience in accounting, bookkeeping operations, or controller-level review.
• CPA designation preferred, but not required if backed by strong Controller experience.
• Mastery of QuickBooks Online and experience with tools like Dext, Plooto, Wagepoint, Knit, and Xero.
• Deep understanding of bookkeeping principles, payroll taxes, and sales tax.
• Confidence reviewing books, flagging issues, and enforcing high standards.
• Systems thinker: able to identify bottlenecks, build SOPs, and drive change.
• Calm under pressure, quick with deadlines, and relentless in pushing for better systems.
• Excellent communicator with a strong coaching mindset.

Compensation:

• Bonus Plan: Tiered performance bonus of up to 50% of base salary annually, based on Labor Efficiency Ratio (LER) and contribution to client file profitability. The more efficiently our team delivers results, the higher your bonus.
