Job summary

Fort McKay Group of Companies LP is seeking a BET Operator to support bird monitoring and environmental activities at a tailings/wastewater site. You will perform general labor duties, operate multiple small machines, and assist with maintenance while following safety procedures.

The role is on-site north of Fort McMurray, AB, with a 6-on/6-off schedule and 12-hour days. A valid Class 5 license, CSO/BSO/CSTS, and a Boat license are required; candidates must be physically fit and able to lift 23

Qualifications

• Completion of a High School Diploma, or a GED equivalent is required.
• A valid Class 5 License (or equivalent) is required, along with a satisfactory 3-year Drivers Abstract.
• CSO or BSO or OSSA/ CSTS 09 is required.
• At least 1+ years of construction experience is required. Candidates with experience operating 980 Loader, SHERP ATV, Kubota, Argo, Zoom Boom & small equipment is required.
• Boat / Pleasure Craft License is required (MED A3 is an asset)
• Understand the impact that tailings have on birds, the environment, and the impact to overall operations.
• Understanding of vehicles, boating practices, heavy equipment, basic maintenance and troubleshooting.
• Physically demanding role, which required candidate to be physically fit and able bodied with ability to lift up to 23 kgs (50 lbs)
• Half- mask fit is required (must be clean shaven)

Responsibilities

• Support bird monitoring and environmental activities on a tailings/wastewater operation.
• Clean/maintain equipment and assist with labor tasks and adhere to policies and procedures.
• Operate SHERPA ATV, Kubota, Argo, Loader, Zoom Boom and other small equipment safely and efficiently.
• Set up, maintenance and removal of bird cannons and deterrents.
• Drive company or light-duty vehicles on site and transport coworkers safely.
• Operate work boat and ice breaker on tailings ponds as required.
• Accept direction from Team Lead/Shift Supervisor and adapt to conditions.
• Participate in toolbox meetings and suggest safety improvements.
• Report maintenance needs to Team Lead/Shift Supervisor.
• Maintain a safe disposition at all times on site.

Job description

Summary

Under the direction of the Team Lead, the BET (Bird Environmental Team) Operator is responsible for supporting bird monitoring and environmental activities for a tailings/wastewater operation on a client site in a safe, productive, and efficient manner according to the scope of the project and the work method being performed. The operator will also clean/maintain the equipment and assist with any labor task and comply with all policies and procedures. This is a safety-sensitive position that requires completion of pre-employment/pre-access testing.

Key Focus

• Perform general/manual labor duties and tasks as required; maintenance, troubleshooting, switchingout propane tanks, and any other labor tasks as required, possibly on or around bodies of water.
• Operate a SHERPA ATV, Kubota, Argo, Loader, zoom boom, and other small equipment during laborrelated activities in a safe, productive and efficient manner.
• Conduct pre-operational checks on the equipment listed above, and keep equipment clean and tidy.
• Conduct set up, maintenance, and take down/removal of bird cannons and bird deterrents.
• Drive company or light duty assigned vehicles on site, transport employees to site locations in a safeand efficient manner.
• Operate work boat and ice breaker on tailings ponds as required.
• Accept instructions from the Team Lead and/or Shift Supervisor as directed, and adjust work andstrategy according to changing conditions, policies, and procedures as needed.
• Participate in toolbox meetings, provide suggestions for improvement and safety.
• Advise Team Lead or Shift Supervisor of any required maintenance or repairs of the equipment.
• Maintain a safe disposition at all times, ensure the safety of the client site and more importantly, the safety of fellow personnel/drivers.

This is full-time position located north of Fort McMurray, AB at the Syncrude site.

Work Schedule: 6 on and 6 off (3 days/ 3 nights/ 6 off); 12 hours per day
