Job summary

GFL Environmental Inc. is seeking an AZ Operator for the Emergency Response division based in Ottawa.

This role operates and maintains heavy vehicles and equipment to support environmental cleanup and spill response activities, while joining a unionized team under the current collective agreement. The position requires a valid AZ license, training in Hazmat and confined space, and willingness to overtime or be on call.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma minimum.
  • Certification from recognized Truck Driving School.
  • Valid Commercial AZ License.
  • Overtime as required.
  • Weekend work may be required, on call schedule in effect on weekly basis.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to environmental and industrial spills.
  • Assist in clandestine laboratory decommissioning.
  • Respond to highway incidents involving tractor trailers and chemical leaks.
  • Assist in train derailments involving hazardous materials and fires.
  • Assist with marine fuel spill response and boom deployment.
  • Follow safety policies and participate in health & safety training.

Job description

We are currently seeking a AZ Operator for our Emergency Response(ER) division in Ottawa. This position plays a critical role in operating and maintaining heavy vehicles and equipment in support of environmental cleanup and emergency spill response activities.

This is a unionized position and will be filled in accordance with the provisions of the current Collective Agreement.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Valid AZ License
  • Operate Proficiently at Equipment, including but not Limited to: Pneumatic & Shell Tankers, Wet / Dry Vac, Hydro Vac, Liquid (wet) vac, Roll-off Truck and/or Trailers Box Trailers & Straight Truck (including use of pallet jackets, dolly’s, carts, etc.)
  • Sewer Cleaning Equipment i.e. combination / sewer flushing units.
  • Confined Space Watch, Rescue & Entrance (certified training required).
  • Certified Emergency Response Hazmat Technician (GFL course)
  • Capable to drive manual transmission truck(s)
Requirements:

The Emergency Response Operator will respond to various incidents such as:
  • Environmental and Industrial spills
  • Clandestine laboratory decommissioning
  • Highway incidents involving tractor trailers, accidents, and chemical leaks
  • Train derailments involving hazardous chemicals, fires, and site safety.
  • Marine operations mostly regarding fuel spills into open bodies of water. Involving boom deployment and boat operations.
  • Weather event responses involving wind/ice storms, forest fires, and flooding.
  • Chemical assessments and advisory services.
  • Working alongside police, fire, EMS, Environment Canada, and other stakeholders.
  • Incidents involving heavy equipment, vacuum trucks, and water blasters.
  • Participating in job specific and health & safety training as required
  • Operating his/her position in an efficient and safe manner
  • Completing work related documentation and reporting
  • Follow all established organizational policies and procedures
  • Promote and participate in a work environment free of workplace harassment and violence
  • Perform work in a safe manner, so as not to endanger oneself or others
  • Reporting workplace hazards, accidents or other occurrences that may pose a risk to the organization or the safety of oneself or others
  • Adhere to the Occupational Health & Safety Act, Workplace Safety & Insurance Board Act, Ontario Human Rights Code and Employment Standards Act
  • Work in a manner that preserves confidentiality and minimizes risk
