Job summary

Big White Ski Resort Ltd. in Kelowna, BC is seeking an Avalanche Technician to support safe mountain operations through avalanche forecasting, hazard assessment, mitigation, and snow safety work.

Working with Ski Patrol and Mountain Operations, you will monitor snowpack conditions, conduct stability tests, perform control work, and help maintain safety for guests and staff. This is a full-time seasonal role with a focus on safe, efficient operations in alpine terrain.

Qualifications

• CAA ITP 1 or pursuing it.
• First Aid Level 3 (80hr+).
• PAL or explosives authorization, or ability to obtain.
• Strong skiing or snowboarding ability in advanced alpine terrain.
• Experience snowpack observations and hazard assessments.
• Excellent communication, teamwork, and decision-making skills.
• Ability to work outdoors in severe winter weather for extended periods.
• Valid Class 5 driver's license.

Responsibilities

• Monitor weather, snowpack, and avalanche conditions through field observations.
• Conduct snow stability tests and hazard assessments.
• Plan and execute avalanche control operations using approved methods.
• Prepare daily avalanche forecasts and communicate recommendations.
• Assist with terrain opening after control work and ensure safety for public access.
• Maintain records of weather, snowpack, and control activities.
• Collaborate with Ski Patrol and Mountain Operations for safe operations.
• Participate in emergency response and search and rescue when required.
• Inspect and inventory avalanche control gear and explosives storage.
• Contribute to Snow Safety Program development.
• Participate in preseason planning and training.
• Maintain compliance with WorkSafeBC regulations.
